Alpha Estate 'Axia' Xinomavro/Syrah 2013
Not Vintage Specific
Wine Advocate 90
The 2013 Axia red is the latest release of Alpha's familiar 50/50 blend of Xinomavro and Syrah, aged for 12 months in French oak (half new, half second use). It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. Beautifully balanced, this expressive wine is elegant and moderate in tannic pop even in its youth. It shows precision as well as a certain understatement. It should age reasonably well and it could use a year or so to settle it, preferably. It should still drink well now and over the next decade. It is a very nice value in a wine with considerable finesse, a classic food wine."
" The lineup from one of Greece's best wineries is exceptional this issue--and remarkably well priced, too. This group is a bargain-hunter's dream, each wine in the lineup competing for "best yet" from Alpha in the brand. Note, though, that they tend to be more Old World in style, if I can use a stereotype. There is always some power here and the crisp reds will show better with food. Earthiness and tension tends to win here over sweet and jammy. " ~ Winery notes
