Empire Wine 92
In 1979 the original three owners (Sacri, Craig and Sherwin) took the first few letters of their last names and created Sacrashe Vineyard. It is situated high above Auberge du Soleil in the eastern Rutherford appellation at 750-800 feet elevation. The vineyard is hidden behind groves of century old oaks and clusters of manzanita brush. The growing conditions are tough due to rocks and tufa (solidified volcanic ash), limiting the vines vigor and crop yields (1.8 tons per acre), but offering explosive flavors and concentration. A vineyard managers nightmare turns into a winemakers dream, as the small berries are loaded with intense flavors and tannin, ultimately producing our most extravagant Cabernet.
"Dark, firm, rich and concentrated. A mouthful of chewy Cabernet, with dried currant, herb, sage, cedar and tobacco flavors that fold together nicely. The fleshy texture softens the tannins midpalate. Complex aftertaste. Best from 2007 through 2012. 200 cases made. (J.L.)" ~Wine Spectator
