Rhone Report 94
"A rough blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Carignan that's aged in older wood, the exotic, yet absolutely brilliant 2009 Domaine Jean-Louis Tribouley Vin de Pays des Cotes Catalanes Les Bacs (Les Bacs is the parcel where the cuvee from) is anything but mainstream with its deep, yet almost piercing bouquet of mineral-drenched green herbs, iron, crushed flowers, walnut, and resinous underbrush-like aromas and flavors. Reticent on the first night, this blossoms with air and is fantastically complex, unique, and captivating on the nose. The quality comes through on the palate as well, where the wine is medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, and concentrated, showing juicy acidity, and an overall energetic, elegant feel. I am a fan, but the herbal, mineral, and earthy character here will not appeal to everyone. Nevertheless, I highly recommend you purchase a bottle, give it a couple hours of air, and keep an open mind; this is exciting stuff and deserves attention. While beautiful now, it has the balance and concentration to evolve gracefully for 10-12 years."

"Tribouley's 2009 Les Bacs Vieilles Vignes - from tank, in which this cuvee is entirely raised - required a good shaking to dissipate reduction. The nose opened up to a scrubby and resinous amalgam of juniper, marjoram, and rosemary, along with concentrated black fruits and hints of tar. This firm but expansive cuvee (as usual, of Grenache with ca. 25-30% Carignan) displays practically adhesive finishing character, sticky but not in the sense of sweetness. Fine tannins add to the impression of formidable density in a wine that almost seems to be struggling to come to terms with its sheer concentration. I don't find the juiciness let alone the energy displayed by the corresponding Orchis (from higher elevation, in the so-called Coume du Roi). Although bottling was due to take place as usual without filtration, Tribouley had elected to postpone it at least through spring, so that the wine might passively shed some of its reduction to become more expressive. This ought to, in any case, be worth following from bottle for at least 6-8 years." ~DS
"Jean-Louis Tribouley produces in a quantitatively good vintage like 09 approximately 1700 cases total of the two wines - Le Bacs and Orchis. The Orchis is a more limited production wine thus in 2009 'Le Bacs' was about 2/3 his total production. Weygandt-Metzler Imports brought in about 150 cases of 2009 'Le Bacs' for the U.S. markets" ~The Importer
