"A brilliant offering is the 2009 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Seguret Les Pialons. Seguret is a top spot for quality, and this blend of 90% Grenache and the rest mostly Syrah and a little Mourvedre offers abundant aromas of ripe kirsch, lavender, dusty, loamy soil, pepper and spice. It is a medium to full-bodied, lusty red to drink over the next 3-4 years."

Grenache in all its glory, this ia as palate staining as crushed raspberries, with a peppery spice and seedy bitterness that balances the fruit's sweetness. An earthy growl of minerality runs under it all, holding the wine firm and strong.

Laurence Féraud’s selections (her family owns Domaine de Pégaü in Châteauneuf-du-Pape) for her négociant line, like this Séguret, often represent excellent values. This is a full-bodied, velvety wine filled with notes of kirsch and Mexican chocolate. The finish is warm and comforting, and like a thick blanket, it would be a welcome sight this winter. - J.C.
