Kingston Family 'Tobiano' Pinot Noir 2013
Lovely unusual Pinot
Feels very well balanced with a "kick" on the palate that's hard to describe. Delicious. Almost a gamey touch on palate with lots of raspberry (which also dominates the nose) - almost like eating turkey with raspberry (not cranberry!) sauce. Medium to Medium+ finish. Try- you won't be disappointed. Paired with turkey meatball sandwich

Bellavista 'Alma' Cuvee Brut NV
Wonderful franciacorta
I have had this one before. I have a high standard for repeating and this sure meets it. One can easily mistake this for a solid champagne- as opposed to a good California sparkler. Better than veuve clicquot for a fraction of price

Gundlach Bundschu Gewurztraminer 2014
Good wine
Made for spicy food- tons of spicy notes to round this wine off. And since I like spicy food, I liked this wine. I paired this with a goat curry and it worked well- it is high in alcohol and you do feel it, so not meant for those looking for a lighter style

Domaine Lafage 'Miraflors' Rose 2015
Very good rose
I agree with Kristy. Very nice rose - made for a picnic in the park. I have certainly had better roses but this would make the top quartile. Very nice wine.

Mayu Pedro Ximenez 2014
Perfectly balanced - perhaps the biggest positive of this wonderful wine. High in alcohol with great acidity, minerality and spiciness -- like biting a green apple on a beautiful summers fresh from the orchard. Medium (and very acceptable) length - does not disappear on the mid palate like too many whites of this style do. I paired this with some spicy chicken salad and it worked well. The first dry px I've had. Wonderful wine- 91-92 points and great value. Kudos to empire on their fine selection.

Villa Maria 'Private Bin' Sauvignon Blanc 2014
Good stuff
Very nice wine- just slightly behind Kim Crawford's sauv blanc but very very good

Masi Campofiorin Ripasso 2012
Distinctive wine
This wine had character. I have had Masi's Amarone and though very different and not as complex and fully charged, this is not too far behind in terms of quality at 1/3 the price. Very soft tannins and great balance - amazing food wine that will go with anything with meat, tomatoe sauce and/or some spice. Tells you that there are some producers (such as Masi) that always deliver..even with their entry level wines.

Saint Hilaire 'Brut' Brut 2013
Daniel's review is spot on
Not the best sparkler under $20 that I've had but comes darn close and comparable, for example, than Veuve clicquot's nv yellow label

Adami 'Bosco Di Gica' Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Brut
Wonderful wine
Amazing off dry prosecco. If you love spicy food like me get a case of this!

Paringa Shiraz 2014
Nothing remarkable - certainly not a serious Australian shiraz
Lacks the body and the sexiness of an Australian Shiraz so do not set your expectations vs a $40 barossa shiraz. But good table wine for the price point to sip by yourself. Disagreeing with the 89 point rating, I'd assign this a low 80s rating

Villa Pozzi Nero d'Avola 2017
Almost like a softer version of a new world shiraz
Very nice for casual drinking at a vino night with friends. Smooth and relatively light on tannins - fruit forward and relatively light/medium bodied wine lacking the typical spicy / peppery / earthier notes of a Nero. Great with snacks and appetizer type foods

Cantina del Taburno Falanghina 2014
Good stuff
Great everyday white. Impressive aromatics of citrus and peaches with distinct minerality at the base. Crisp and fresh but enough body to pair with a nice sonoma chicken salad sandwich or even with mildly spicy cuisine.

Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 2012
One of the best CDPs
I've not had this vintage but the 2004 was great. is a deep and complex wine with an amazing finish that seems to go on for a minute. I think this has more Mourvèdre than a typical CDP which sets it apart. One of the best Rhone wines I've had which I very much enjoyed with an excellent ribeye

E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2011
One of the best cote du rhones around
one of my go-to reds. The only reason it's an everyday wine is the price point- it's a truly complex wine believe me and probably a $20-25 value. The 2009 vintage was simply outstanding and probably 92 points at least -- sadly that is no longer easily available but the 2010 /11 are very good as well - as with any vintage I've had (Guigal is synonymous with quality across the board)

Man Vintners 'Steen' Chenin Blanc 2014
Brilliant qpr
Probably the best wine at this price I've had. I have to admit Wine Advocate's rating is pretty well deserved. This is a pretty complex wine and simply amazing that it sells under under $7. My first Chenin Blanc from South Africa and a great introduction-- I've had plenty from Vouvray but this felt a lot closer to the fresh yet expressive style I like in whites in general

Dr. Loosen 'Red Slate' Dry Riesling 2014
Great Riesling
Very nice dry Riesling. I got notes fresh notes of Apple and citrus - very refreshing. As always a great value from Empire. Lovely by itself or with a Napa chicken sandwich or a nice salad.

Weingut Stadlmann Classic Pinot Noir 2013
Lacks character
Not enough flavor or depth and disappointing finish. You can get excellent spatburgunders near enough to this price.

J.J. Vincent Julienas 'La Conseillere' 2010
Rarely does a Beaujolais disappoint and this is a typical one - fabulous balance between the fruity and typical earthy notes. One of the top 5 Beaujolais wines I've had. (ps best one by far is Ganevat Madelan 2013 which I would request Empire to please stock -- it is an amazing wine and at 40-50 bucks comparable to highest quality burgundy reds)

Bread & Butter Chardonnay 2013
Let me caveat my recommendation. If you like overly oaked Chardonnays (almost heavily buttered popcorn taste) then you will like this- if you find that overwhelming (like I do) then you may think this is a bit much. Certainly needs food, but was too much for me even when I paired with a buttered chicken curry and a creamy pasta dish.

Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2014
Decent wine
I had the 2010 vintage. Great wine for everyday drinking (around 85 points I'd say or 3.5/5) though didn't blow my socks off. Nice juicy crunchy red fruit texture and taste supplemented by a hint of florality, short to medium finish, medium acidity and medium body. Pleasant weekday wine with some simple cheese pizza or spaghetti with tomato sauce, but can equally be enjoyed by itself after a long day at work.

Tenuta di Sesta Brunello di Montalcino 2010
Pretty average
Maybe it's go thru a phase right now but not too expressive and a bit closed on nose and palate. Better Italian values out there

Oyster Bay Pinot Noir 2013
My go-to Pinot noir
Has impressed in a blind tasting with friends multiple times. Wonderful light Pinot with real character driven by purity and "freshness" of fruit. Delicious - I'd rate 90 points

E. Guigal 'Blanc' Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2014
You can't go wrong with Guigal
Both with their entry level wines (like this and their wonderful Cotes du Rhone Rouge) and their fabulous Northern Rhone wines, Guigal is one of the most reliable names in the world of wine. Yt another example of a $30 value for a fraction of the price

Gloria Ferrer 'Blanc de Noir' Blanc de Noirs NV
Best sparkling wine under $20
Did a blind taste of this vs a Veuve Clicquot (NV) with 10 people and this won hands down. Great expressive nose and the only thing separating this from a great champagne is the length of the finish

Charles Smith 'KungFu Girl' Riesling 2014
Great value
Always reliable. A complex and different Riesling and absolutely amazing value. Citrus, Apple and honey notes or rather layers in this beautiful wine. Just a little bit of residual sugar but not too sweet - perfect for pairing with Asian food. I had this with some Kung Pao chicken and IMHO this particular Riesling is the one of the best pairings with that, second only to a good Gruner Veltliner.

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2014
What a wonderful SB!
I am generally very discriminating on SB's given the variation by region -- I prefer the crispness of an Alsace Riesling or the the lightness of a Pinot Grigio. But this is an exceptional SB even for NZ standards which excels in them. Lovely notes of mango with hints of citrus on the nose, and so refreshing on the palate, I did not order this one from Empire but will do soon. This is better than $30-40 SB's I have tasted. Wow - 92-93 points for me

Louis de Sacy Grand Cru Brut Rose
Average brut rose
Nothing special especially for a champagne but nothing bad about it as well -- just truly ... Average. I bought the graham beck brut rose at 40% of the price from Empire which I found better.

Fattoria del Cerro 'Manero' Rosso de Toscana 2014
Solid tuscan red
Great value. While I don't agree with suckling, I think this is a solid 90+ points and better than many higher $$$ supertuscans. Very drinkable, soft tannins, medium acidity, reasonable complexity and medium finish. Enjoy with a slice of mushroom pizza from your deli with a bit of crushed red pepper and you won't regret

Giuseppe Cortese 'Rabaja' Barbaresco DOCG 2005
Classic Nebbiolo
Beautiful wine and drinking so well right now. Typical tar and roses notes. Soft tannins and most importantly an impressive finish, better than some pricier Barolos I have had

Domaine Des Bosquets Gigondas 2012
Amazing Gigondas
Another amazing value from Empire and reminds you what great values you can get from Rhone reds particularly Gigondas and Vacqueras. Rich luscious dark berry flavors. Full bodied with 15% abv yet so smooth. Needs decanting and was even better the second day. Ideal with red meats with some tangy sauce or yogurt component - I had this with Turkish lamb kabobs over yogurt and could not have been a better companion than this
