HARD TO KEEP A GOOD CAB SECRET"I gifted this to my sister last year. She lives in an upscale seniors' complex in Hendersonville, NC. Soon after receipt of the Hardin, friendly neighbors started dropping in to her house more often for a glass of afternoon wine. Three resupplies later, she is now getting invitations to visit other residents for a glass or two, "And why don't you bring some wine!"Be careful what you share . . . or bask in the reputation and keep pouring.MIH"

TOO SWEET AND NOT MORE WINE LIKE THAN THE SPARKLING GRAPE JUICES."Somebody aught to be able to do better than this, but maybe the return is not worth it and the quality seltzer gang will take over the whole no-alch market."

RIDGE...OF COURSE IT IS GOOD."There are any number of very good zins made in the Dry Creek Valley AVA, and on into the Russian River AVA. However, many of the others are pushing Napa prices. Buy Ridge or Dry Creek Vineyards."

UNWISE TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THE UNAVAILABLE"I actually bought more because those friends cleaned ME out. But, with a bottling this small, we are just lucky to get a taste before it is gone. WA 92 is a helpful nudge to buy. How are we going to keep it long the cellar after everybody knows it is there?"

YOU ARE KIDDING...A SUPER TUSCAN AT THIS PRICE!"WS put it in the top 100, and who can afford any of the other 99. More interesting to me is that Empire's neighbor just down the Hudson in Millbrook, John Dyson, makes this gem...along with the spectacular pinots from Williams Selyem and rising stars under the Millbrook label. Take notice folks. New York has a world-class winery proprietor who is Cornell educated, hands on, and dedicated to the best quality at a fair priceThis wine is just one good example. Check out the Millbrook ratings."

STRAIGHT FROM THE MISTS OF COOK STRAIT"This SB is a real Marlborough bargain. Triple the price won't buy 10% better. Crisp fruit, balanced mineral, and soft nose all add up to the perfect summertime wine."

STARMONT IS OUR STANDARD"I heard an interview with a top micro-brewer who said that everything they brewed was tasted against a constant - Coors Light. Our constant for Chardonnay is Starmount...a few levels above his beer standard but equally consistent...lightly showing some mineral and summer fruit from tongue to finish, and whispers, (not shouts) "Chardonnay.""

UP, UP & A WAY BETTER THAN EXPECTED"Ordered this unknown light white blend as part of a free ship to the Florida condo, and it turned out to be the favorite late-afternoon aperitif of this sunny season. The nose is lightly fruited, the mouth feel is substantive, and the finish retains light mineral with stone fruit. This will be a new summer standard for guests."

RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX!"Having just engaged in a tussle with a different supplier about the mess made by putting styrofoam chips in the shipping box, the Empire Heartland case arrives, is unpacked cleanly, and the first bottle taken directly to the dinner table...decanted of course. What a treat all the way around. So, I go straight to my computer but find the 2012 gone. Anyway, excellent cab and excellent service."

DARN FEW 100% THESE DAYS."So, just try finding a dry Semillion this side of Australia. There might be three...and here is a good one!And if you are trying a dry Semillion for the first time, try this one."

BEST ZIN DEAL I HAVE FOUND"As I have a good supply of Artezin ( a favorite) with which to compare, my judgement is that the Gnarly Head softer, more fruit forward, and has a longer finish. Comparisons with higher end zins are beyond my experience."

STAR OF THE MERRY VALE"I picked this up first in a Florida supermarket, by chance, then for bigger bucks in a Florida wine superstore. Empire is the place to buy and Starmont is chard to buy. This 2012 is as rich with stone fruit and light tropical finish as Merryvale's first labels. I put in two cases for summer."

BETTER THAN PHANTOM THIS YEAR"This is a perfect summer red, but not poured straight from the bottle at summer room temperature. Somebody once defined the right temperature as a drafty country mansion room in April. That is just about right for Bogle reds."

EYE OF THE TOAD IS A BIT HOLLOW."I am a dry rose' fan and a Toad Hollow fan.I am not a big fan of this rose', but found that it improved with rest in the cellar. We plan not to keep it there long, however."
