About
The Cortes Family is considered by many to be mezcal royalty. For close to 200 years, the Cortes family has been growing, foraging and distilling the maguey in the Zapotec village of Santiago Matatln. Santiago Matatln is situated 30 miles southeast of Oaxaca City and is considered the gateway to the Oaxacan highlands, mezcal country! Besides being farmers and master distillers, the Cortes family is the driving force behind the award winning mezcals of El Jolgorio and Nuestra Soledad. Asis, his father Valentin and his uncle Rolando traveled through the mountains and valleys of Oaxaca, seeking mezcaleros who shared a similar ideology to that of their own. This idea is simple, as it has always been. Respect the land, honor the tradition, do it for the love and the rest will take care of itself. This is obviously easier said than done, but the Cortes family took their time and put together the all-star team they had always dreamed of.
