Makers Mark 46 Cask Strength was originally released as a distillery-only product in 2015. It was reintroduced in July 2020 to celebrate the brand's 10th anniversary. Once again a distillery-only release, it has since turned into a wider limited release. While the brand has been tight-lipped on providing additional information, we do know that this is being sold in several states (Kentucky and Pennsylvania being two) as of the publication of this review.

Light but distinct scents of graham cracker, toasted oak, and marshmallow take shape. It reminds me of everything you need for a perfect campfire-inspired flavor profile sans the smoke. Exploring further brings forth toffee and light caramel, along with a bold dash of cinnamon that showcases the bourbons proof, almost to a fault. Overall its a nice smorgasbord of classic scents that with the exception of the bold cinnamon, balance one another nicely, and offers just enough intrigue to draw you in.

Sweet cinnamon bursts forward with a tenacity thats in line with its cask strength designation. Following up behind are vanilla and light oak along with a swirl of gentle wheat grain and honey. While its certainly bold, owing to its higher proof, it also finds a way to showcase its more gentle flavors reminding you that this is a wheated bourbon after all. Maker's MarkMaker's Mark is unusual in that no rye is used as part of the mash. Instead red winter wheat is used, along with corn (the predominant grain) and malted barley. During the planning phase of Maker's Mark, Samuels allegedly developed seven candidate mash bills for the new bourbon. As he did not have time to distill and age each one for tasting, he instead made a loaf of bread from each recipe and the one with no rye was judged the best tasting. Samuels also received considerable assistance and recipes from Stitzel-Weller owner Pappy Van Winkle, whose distillery produced the wheated Old Fitzgerald and W. L. Weller bourbons.[20]

Maker's Mark is aged for around six years, being bottled and marketed when the company's tasters agree that it is ready. Maker's Mark is one of the few distillers to rotate the barrels from the upper to the lower levels of the aging warehouses during the aging process[citation needed] to even out the differences in temperature during the process. The upper floors are exposed to the greatest temperature variations during the year, so rotating the barrels ensures that the bourbon in all the barrels have the same quality and taste.
