330 hectares of virgin land were purchased in 2003 by Kurt Heinlein, in the San Rafael zone of south Mendoza. The vineyards were planted next to the Diamante River on the foothills of the Andes Mountains at 2726 feet above sea level, on sandy chalk soils. Franco Lucchini is the viticulturist and Jimena Lopez is the winemaker. Mr Heinlein is of German descent and Funckenhausen celebrates his heritage. Ms Lopez is one of a growing group of young and very talented female winemakers in South America.
