Red Car is a group of hands-on farmers, part of a small cadre of wineries in the region who are fortunate to grow a large majority of their own fruit. For several years now they have worked hard to go beyond sustainability and have integrated the concepts and principles of organic, biodynamic and permaculture systems into their farming as we search for nature's ideal pathways. Red Car as it is known today was first imagined during an inaugural trip to the coastal mountains of western Sonoma County. Driving up King Ridge Road researching potential sites, the team had a clear sense that had found the place where Red Car should settle, a place to call home. It is hard to express something not fully formed, but that morning's sights and smells of the Pacific fog mixing with the giant redwoods as the sunshine pushed it back out to sea inspired in them a harmony with nature. They felt connected to the hum of the land and couldn't wait to express its uniqueness in our wines. In a short number of years, the Red Car team purchased land, planted a vineyard and quietly went about their work so that they might listen and clearly discern the essence of what came to be called the West Sonoma Coast. Wine is important because it connects us to nature. But to offer meaning beyond itself, a wine has to come from a certain place, not just any place. And the winemaker must stand aside and allow that place to transmit its story without manipulation. This is the never-ending pursuit at Red Car.
