"Carver-Sutro is a joint venture of Denis Sutro and wife Anne Carver. All of their fruit is sourced from the Palisades Vineyard in Calistoga. This site is considered by many to be one of the "Grand Cru" vineyards in all of California for Petite Sirah due to its positioning in a small, well exposed valley. This protects against botrytis, which often affects Petite Sirah in the late season. The vineyard has long been the source for Stag's Leap's Reserve Petite Sirah, and they continue to buy grapes to this day. The old head-pruned vines cover 18 acres and average around 35 years old. The late season winds that funnel up the valley, can often intensify the concentration and flavors through a slight "passerillage" (or drying) of the grapes just before harvest. The wines are made by Gary Brookman who also makes wines for Grace Family. These are pure, dense, massive Petite Sirahs, built for the ages. Production is limited, with only around 500 cases produced each year. Wine critic Robert Parker calls Carver-Sutro "a Petite Sirah of monumental proportions [and] some of the finest Petite Sirahs I have tasted."
