Frequently Asked Questions About White Burgundy

How long can I age a White Burgundy?

Bourgogne Blanc and Maconnais can age between 1-4 years of the vintage. Chablis and the Cote de Beaune can age about 2-5 years for village wines, 4-7 years for premier crus, and 4 to 10+ for the Grand Cru level.

What's the Best White Burgundy food pairing?

Bourgogne Blanc

Chicken and middle-weight pasta make a great match with Bourgogne Blanc. This is a lovely style to enjoy by itself.

Chablis

Oysters and anything from the raw bar is a textbook pairing for Chablis wine.

Côte de Beaune

Richer fish dishes, pork, chicken, and anything in a cream sauce or with mushrooms go great with this powerful and deep style of Burgundian White.

Maconnais

A midweight wine goes great with any sort of middle-weight dishes, such as cured pork products.

What are the best White Burgundy vintages?

The best vintages:

The most outstanding White Burgundy vintages are 2005, 2008, 2010, and 2014. Out of these four, 2014 is by far the best investment, as its firm acidity will allow these wines to age gracefully for at least another 20 years, if not more.

Very good quality vintages:

Middle-of-the-pack white Burgundy vintages include 2006, 2007, and 2009 vintages, as well as those ranging from 2011 through 2013.

Information About White Burgundy

What's the White Burgundy grape?

If you see a label stating "White Burgundy" it means that it’s made directly from Chardonnay. Burgundy is, in fact, the birthplace of Chardonnay, and has a prominent and firmly established place in the canon of top-shelf white wines. White Burgundy owes its acclaim to the unique traditions, climate, and agronomy of Burgundy, which is unparalleled the world over.

Despite being known by Chardonnay, Burgundy also produces other white varieties as Aligoté (Bourgogne Aligoté appellation), Pinot Blanc (found in Nuits-St-Georges), Pinot Gris (a mutation of Pinot Noir), and Sauvignon Blanc (found in the Saint-Bris appellation).

Did you know? Terroir (/tɛˈrwɑːr/, from terre, "land") is a French term used to describe the environmental factors that affect a vine's character, including specific environmental factors such as climate, terrain, and soil, as well as cultural aspects such as people and farming practices.

White Burgundy Regions

The distribution of quality levels in all Burgundy wines are based on each area’s different terroir, and thus, distinct flavor profiles:

Bourgogne Blanc

White wines are allowed to blend Chardonnay grapes from all over the region, as they are the basic white appellation. These wines are unoaked, rather simple wines with mineral and apple notes. Winemakers allow these wines to undergo malolactic fermentation, which gives them a typical creamy, slightly nutty character. It’s uncommon for them to go through oak aging, and they are made with a light body and fresh style.

Bourgogne is what can be called a genuinely fantastic "everyday bottle."

Chablis

Chablis is the northernmost (and coldest) region in Burgundy and is known to deliver the crispest acid profile of all white Burgundies. Chablis is known to be mostly unoaked, making zippy and lean wines with lime-like mineral flavors. The fruit character is more pronounced than a Bourgogne Blanc and commonly displays notes of lime zest, tart green apple, quince, and under-ripe pear. An underlayer of brie rind, yogurt, and white flowers are also typical from this style.

Burgundy also has unique chalky white soils, being home to many Grand Cru vineyard sites, where the fruit intensity and quality allow many producers to oak their wines. This leads to a richer and more complex style. There are many different quality levels of Chablis, all delivering an outstanding price/quality ratio.

Mâconnais

Mâconnais is in the southernmost end of Burgundy, right next to Beaujolais, where the climate is much warmer than the rest of Burgundy and produces wines of a fleshier and riper fruit character.

Mâconnais wines are usually fruity, light, unoaked everyday whites. Their fruit-forward aroma displays notes of melon and starfruit notes. You will find more typicity and intensity than the Bourgogne Blanc, but with slightly less power and finesse than wines from the Côte de Beaune. If you're a California Chardonnay lover, a warmer vintage village-level Mâconnais wine is an excellent introduction to White Burgundy.

Côte de Beaune

This is the top quality of White Burgundy, and these wines are consistently oak-aged with fleshy yellow apple and starfruit flavors, complemented with underlayers of truffle, hazelnut, and vanilla. It is the most powerful of all French Chardonnay. The quintessential Burgundian winemaking traditions shine through a well-integrated, balanced oak profile that provides aromas of cinnamon, toasted almond, and toasted bread.
