Item Description

" Batch #004 is the first release of the 2014 vintage and once againMendocino Zinfandel plays a big role in the blend with classic oldvineyards such as Sargentini and Rucker vineyards. Head trained and dry farmed, these vineyards give nice raspberry fruits. Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel also makes a big impact on the blend in Batch #004. Dry Creek is a classic and well known source for great Zinfandel and has added a new dimension to the 1000 Stories blend. Black fruits with distinct notes of black pepper and even a bit of clove spice add complexity to the blend. Also new to this batch is the addition of Lodi Zinfandel, with its iconic bold flavors and big character. Rounding out the blend are some Zinfandels from Colusa County, Syrah from Paso Robles and Petite sirah from Mendocino. A portion of the wine is aged in French and American oak for 6 months and then aged further in bourbon barrels. We’ve selected new and used bourbon barrels for these small batches of Zinfandel, which impart characteristics specific to these barrels: charred vanilla, dried herbs and a hint of caramel. 1,000 Stories is produced in small batches, much like premium bourbon. Select parcels of Zinfandel were sourced from Mendocino County, some of which came from vineyards with family histories dating back to the 1880's. Each individual lot started the ageing process in traditional American and French wine barrels. The next step was the introduction of the wine to bourbon barrels. Part of the blend was aged in new bourbon barrels from the Independent Stave Company. This process is similar to ageing in wine barrels, but with a flavor profile unique to the charred bourbon barrels – vanilla, dried herbs and a hint of caramel. The final step of the process was the most grand: the blend completed its barrel ageing in old bourbon barrels from famed distilleries such as Heaven Hill and Four Roses. Some of these barrels were 13 year old, single-use barrels, used to make the highest quality bourbon.

A great Zinfandel

"I usually go for Old Vines Zins when I can, but the Bourbon Barrel intrigued me. I was not disappointed. Bold and jammy as a Zinfandel should be with a honest to God Bourbon nose and a hint of smoke and ash."

My favorite red zin.

"Purchased this wine on a whim because it was on sale. Love the mellow silky fruit taste that doesn't have that dry bitter after taste that so many of the red wines leave you with. I highly recommend this wine."

"Great Zinfandel! Everyone enjoyed this - wonderful flavor with smooth finish."

Douglas

Delicious!

"Bourbon barrel aging produced a velvety, slide over the tongue, easy drinking zin that kept its spicy nature, but did not impart the sweetness I expected. Smooth and delicious, but be careful it goes down easy and could be a real porch pounder!"

Complexity without tanins

"Personally, we do not prefer the acid burning finish in our wines. Of course, we don't want simple grape juice presence either. This wine has a slight hint of a dry port for us."

A Bottle of Bummer

"Without sounding like a complete lush- I love to drink wine. I enjoy several different kinds of wine from merlot to pinot grigio and everything in between. I am not formally trained and I am far from a connoisseur, but I know what I like! I recently discovered a bottle of bourbon barrel aged zinfandel at Costco and I just had to see what this interesting product was all about. When I look for a bottle of wine I want it to meet my expectations regarding cost, potency, reputation, and most importantly, taste. It usually doesn’t take much to make me a happy girl with a wine glass in my hand, however this Zinfandel missed the mark on flavor and was a big disappointment. Despite a hopeful build up of promising features, the taste sensation was like a charred version of cherry Nyquil and was a real let down. This is my experience trying 1000 Stories Zinfandel by Fetzer. The first thing that I noticed and quickly liked about this bottle of wine was that it was under $20. $17.97 to be exact. While it is fairly easy to find an affordable bottle of wine at this price point, the unusual thing was that it was also placed in the “featured” display and had a Wine Enthusiast rating of 91 out of 100 for quality. Usually a bottle of wine with such a high score is sold at a much higher price so I was intrigued. I am far from a wine snob and like middle shelf labels such as Black Box (yep, I said box) and Barefoot for the affordability in relation to awards and quality scores. $20 is my home turf. The unique contrast of a modest price tag and high quality score definitely had my attention. In addition to the value, this wine also sported a high ABV (alcohol by volume) level of 15.6- wow! This wine is definitely a heavy hitter which, let’s be honest, I like. I usually drink wine with an average ABV of 12, so without a doubt, this particular wine packs a punch. After a few sips, I could definitely feel the effects. This zinfandel, like most, is best enjoyed while eating a meal with red meat for a nice hearty balance.1000 Stories Zinfandel has an excellent reputation. This wine follows in the trendy footsteps of craft beers, exploring unique and interesting flavor combination. The wine is aged in oak bourbon barrels previously used for the aging of high quality bourbon such as Heaven Hill and Four Roses. These oak barrels have been charred on the inside to give the bourbon, and eventually the zinfandel, a unique smoky-tobacco flavor as they age. In addition to this unique flavor profile, 1000 Stories also boast origins from a reputable vineyard from the Mendocino, CA region. Along with numerous rave reviews, this small batch wine definitely has the resume to back up a 91 out of 100 quality rating and is categorized as “outstanding.”Despite all of these positive attributes, for me there was one ultimate deal breaker… the taste. The first sip is a heavy and powerful punch of dark cherry and currant mixed with the sharp bite of bourbon. It tastes fiery as you swallow and warms you all the way down to your belly. The aftertaste is not a smooth one, but rather very bitter and chary. This wine was overwhelming and harsh and I felt that if I had more than one small glass, it would make me feel sick. I usually like the velvety depth of a zinfandel, however, this particular spin on a classic was simply too much of a bitter, smoky twist for my liking. I was hoping for something to enjoy as I unwind at the end of a long day, but instead I found something quite overpowering and close to making me queasy. This wine has many great attributes but, in the end, I simply did not enjoy the taste. I won’t be purchasing it again and if your tastes are anything like mine, I would suggest a more traditional zinfandel to enjoy. I am just a simple wine lover searching for something that tastes good, gives me a giggle, and won’t break the bank. My wine quest continues… though I am far from sad about it.Works CitedGordon, Jim, editor. “1000 Stories 2013 Bourbon Barrel Aged Zinfandel (Mendocino).” Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Wine Enthusiast Network, www.winemag.com/buying-guide/1000-stories-2013-bourbon-barrel-aged-zinfandel-mendocino.
