The Azelia estate is a Barolo lover’s secret – though the estate is not a high-profile one, proprietor Luigi Scavino is cousin of Enrico Scavino of the Paolo Scavino estate, and shares ownership of the famed Fiasco hill with him, in addition to the San Rocco holdings in Serralunga. This 16 hectare estate is planted to Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. Luigi and wife Lorella still maintain some tradition in the cellar, with the greatest focus and efforts expended on vineyard management. Their San Rocco” is a muscular, characterful wine – the Scavinos were the first to establish this as an important cru. In total, the estate produces about 6,000 cases per year.

Vineyard Management: Azelia’s vineyard management program under Agronomist Nicola Algamante focuses on integrated pest management and integrated disease control in the vineyards. The number of pest-control treatments is reduced to a minimum, and copper- and sulfur-based products are mainly utilized. Soil analysis is carried out every two years and organic fertilizers are used when needed. Cover crops are sown between the rows of vines, the grass is mowed and the soil is not tilled (the turf is left in place). There is very careful use of SO2 in the wines.
