" Aromas of black cherry syrup, strawberry, smoke, and road tar, with hints of herbs and brush leap from the glass. Velvety and sweetly ripe on the mid-palate with no angularity. Great complexity all the way through the ripely tannic and smokey finish.

The Azelia estate is still many a Barolo lover’s secret – though the estate is not a high-profile one, proprietor Luigi Scavino is cousin of Enrico Scavino of the Paolo Scavino estate, and shares ownership of the famed Fiasco hill with him, in addition to the San Rocco holdings in Serralunga. This 11 hectare estate, planted to Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto produce more traditionally minded wines.

The contrast between the two “Bricco Fiasco” wines is notable; Enrico Scavino is firmly in the modernist camp, and Luigi and wife Lorella still maintain some tradition in the cellar, with the greatest focus and efforts expended on vineyard management. The “San Rocco” is a muscular, characterful wine – the Scavinos were the first to establish this as an important cru.

In 1998, Azelia’s Barolos were “two superb efforts,” according to Robert Parker, with “hedonistic, sensual” qualities - he scored the Barolos from this estate 91-93 points! In addition, Azelia's highly sought-after Dolcetto "Bricco dell'Oriolo" and Barbera “Punta” (both were awarded “Two Glasses” in the 2003 Gambero Rosso) feature rich structure, balance, and instant drinking pleasure. The latest addition to their portfolio, the 2000 Barolo Riserva “Voghera-Brea,” has already received 92 points from the Wine Spectator, thus joining the long list of 90+-point wines from this outstanding estate.

Azelia's vineyard management program under Agronomist Nicola Algamante focuses on integrated pest management and integrated disease control in the vineyards. The number of pest-control treatments is reduced to a minimum, and copper- and sulfur-based products are mainly utilized. Soil analysis is carried out every two years and organic fertilizers are used when needed. Cover crops are sown between the rows of vines, the grass is mowed and the soil is not tilled (the turf is left in place). There is very careful use of SO2 in the wines. " ~ Winery notes
