From one of Australia's most treasured estates, this cool-climate Shiraz from western Victoria is a little meaty and mushroomy at first, the plum and currant fruit trailing just behind. It has cola-like polish from the oak influence and an underbelly of flowers and spices. Despite the fruit plushness on the palate, there's still verve, freshness and a smudged charcoal texture to the powerful tannins. Drink now2025.

James Suckling 93
" Distinctive, cool-climate aromas of red berries, pepper, toasted spices, bacon fat and cocoa, sitting in fresh, complex mode. The palate is elegant, fine and fresh with long, silky tannins delivering fresh red-plum and blackberry flavors. Silky finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
Tasting Notes:
An intense perfume of dried flowers, aniseed and blueberry is enveloped with notes of bitter chocolate, savoury spices and pepper. Smooth and succulent flavours of blueberry and plum careen along with the fine grained tannins and mineral acid. The core of lush fruit finishes with a drying savoury finish.
Colour
Very dark red with a garnet hue.
Bouquet
Lifted aromas of rose petal, blueberry, black jubes and asian spices with some nutty notes in the background.
Palate
Juicy red and blue fruit flavours fill the mouth. The plush medium bodied texture is drawn out for a long savoury finish.
Cellaring
This vibrant and youthful wine is great to enjoy now with food but will soften and gain complexity over the next 10-15 years. Ideal to drink with a seared Venison ribeye steak and a wild mushroom sauce.
Vintage
A moderate season with no real hot spells. Very cool nights and warm days ensured the grapes ripened fully but retained all their natural acidity. Quality is very good, but crops were reduced due to the dry weather and spring
frosts
The Wine:
Bests Great Western as a Shiraz house has gathered experience with the variety through the legacy of Bests long winemaking history dating back to 1866. Bin 1 Shiraz is the wine that often gives people an introduction to the regional style of Great Western Shiraz.
Made predominantly from Bests own vineyards and meticulously crafted with the same attention to detail as the Icon wines, Bin 1 Shiraz represents the essence of Bests Great Western winemaking ideals and the uniqueness of the Great Western region.
Bin 1 is a classic, cool climate, aromatic Shiraz, made in a style that is perfumed, spicy and peppery, yet well balanced with no overt dominance of alcohol. Its a great match with foodparticularly dishes like spring lamb.
The Estate:
Founded in 1866, 2016 is Bests 150th year, making it one of the oldest family wineries in the country and possessing some of the worlds oldest vines on own roots (Shiraz planted 1867 and Pinot Meunier planted 1868). Formerly known as the Great Western region, The Grampians lay at the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, where the region benefits from altitude and abundant sunshine days but suffers low rainfall. Bests are particularly hailed for their Riesling, which ages wonderfully.
