"The 2012 Aglianico del Vulture Gudarrà is a gorgeous wine and the perfect place to start for those who are not familiar with the great wines of Basilicata. The bouquet here is very distinctive with deep layers of tar, road pavement, asphalt, old spice and tobacco that make fascinating contours to black fruit and plum. Gudarrà is a dark, brooding expression with moxie, power and determination. It is unlike any other wine I have tasted from the Vulture region. The mouthfeel is leaner than I expected, but the persistency is long. It should evolve nicely over the next five to ten years. This is great value option for those curious about Aglianico."

BiscegliaThe Bisceglia (pronounced: be-SHAYL-yah) estate is an important and dynamic winery offering a range of top-quality products. After many years in the corporate food industry, Mario Bisceglia returned to his land to begin this adventure and founded the estate in 2001. His goal is to continually produce world-class wines made with both indigenous and international varietals grown in the Basilicata region.

The Bisceglia estate is situated on the lower slopes of the extinct volcano, Mount Vulture, in the splendid district of Lavello. This old farming community is officially recognized as "Wine Town" in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy. The winery itself was designed by internationally acclaimed architects Hikaru Mori and Domenico Santomauro, and has state-of-the-art winemaking facilities and aging cellars. The estate extends over pristine hillsides rich in flora and fauna, characterized by a Mediterranean mesoclimate. A natural balance of temperature shifts characterizes this terroir, conferring remarkable fertility to calcareous and clay loam soils.

Wowza!

"I first tried an Aglianicio in the small town of San Denato Val de Comino and loved it. Of course, we have all tried wines on vacation, as we have fallen in love with the pigeons and rain--which we would most certainly curse at home. A bit of rose-colored-glasses syndrome. So in seeking out this variety once at home, I was expecting to find an Aglianico (couldn't find exact one) that was just a woken-up version of a dream, so my expectations posed quite a demand on the fine Empire staff. Zowie! Very dark purple, biting dryness of a Barolo, and lots of pepper and spice. So much complexity on the finish, which is where the fruit and leather emerge. Love it, what can I say? Could it mean that I wasn't in la-la land on my vacation? I would even go as far as to say the it surpassed the Aglianico that started this whole love affair. Thank you, Empire Wine!!"
