Wine Spectator 91
"Elegant and mineral-driven, with beautiful cut to the gooseberry, lilac and quince flavors. White pepper and coriander notes emerge midpalate, as this goes toward a richly spiced finish that draws you in for another sip."
2018 white Loire wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc from Pouilly Fum and Sancerre, are without a doubt some of the most pleasurable, refreshing and mineral-rich wines anywhere. Make room nowthis is one the finest Pouilly-Fum Francis has ever made. Francis Blanchet in 2016 crafted a Cuve Silice that delivers the soul of the Loire Valley, a classic example of Sauvignon Blanc that has plenty of smoke, crushed stones and racy fruit. A truly great vintage with great acid, perfectly healthy and ripe fruit that make it a marvel today and give it the potential to age for years. Recently we tasted 10 different wines going back to 15 years that were all remarkably vibrant and tasty. The 2016 Pouilly-Fum Cuve Silice is racy and refreshing, balanced yet bold. Drenched with the juices of a dozen fresh limes and sprinkled with white pepper and plenty of flint, the wine takes a page from the past mineral-rich and long lived vintages like 1991 and 1996.
This cuvee is sourced from 1 ha of 25 year old vines making for 8,000 bottle total production. The parcel comprises all of the domaines holdings grown on 100 Silex soils (as well as being the smallest production cuve of the domaine). Stainless steel temperature controlled fermentation. 3 to 4 months aging on the lees with 3 lees stirrings.

Winemaker and owner Francis Blanchet's domaine consists of around 8 ha (4ha estate owned and the remainder leased and farmed 100% by the Blanchet's under fermage contract) of vines comprising many different parcels within the appellation. The unifying signature, year to year, for the Blanchet wines always tends to be: citrus, mineral and purity.
All of the vines used for his "Cuvée Silice" (the cuvée which MSW always buys) are situated in the quaint village of St. Andelain, which boasts the largest percentage of "silex" or "silice" soil in the entire Pouilly Fume appellation. Those vines are all 25 years old now, planted by Francis himself.
