"The straightforward and fruit-driven 2013 Crianza is a classical Ribera del Duero: clean, modern and with nicely integrated oak. It's pure Tempranillo aged in French oak (70% new) for 22 months. Aster is the Ribera del Duero winery from La Rioja Alta in Haro. They own 95 hectares planted around the winery in the village of Anguix, close to Roa in the province of Burgos. These are the best wines I’ve tasted from them, with better balance and less oak than in the past.
" A dry winter and a particularly rainy spring delayed the vines' growth cycle. However, thanks to significant water reserves in the soil, the vines experienced optimal growth. Low temperatures and frost in September and October delayed the optimal time for harvesting the grapes. For the Áster we decided to wait even longer, to ensure suitable phenolic ripeness, which came after the grapes were sugar ripe. During the harvest, there was good sun exposure in the daytime and low temperatures at night, resulting in a significant accumulation of polyphenols in grapes. The Control Board gave this vintage an official 'Very Good' rating.
100% Tinta del País from the Fuentecojo and El Caño vineyards surrounding the winery. They are on silt loam soils located at an altitude close to 780 meters.
Production and Ageing:
After careful monitoring of ripening parameters in these plots, the grapes were harvested by hand and transported to the winery in small tubs. After destemming and crushing, the grapes were put in tanks where they underwent alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. Barrel ageing lasted 22 months in new barrels, 50% of which were medium-toast made with American oak directly imported by us while the other 50% were French oak. During this time, the wine was racked on three occasions, using traditional barrel-to-barrel methods. It was bottled in August 2011.
Deep cherry-red of medium-high intensity and a lively garnet-red rim. Good concentration of aromas, with aniseed notes mixed with hints of underbrush, cedar, liquorice and cloves. Well-balanced in the mouth, with good acidity. A full Ribera del Duero with firm, marked tannins that offer a pleasant creaminess. Spicy, flavourful, aftertaste with toasty notes from barrel ageing. A fine wine that will acquire finesse in the bottle.
History: Áster was created with wisdom, enthusiasm and great patience. We sought the best possible site following the advice of the Denomination’s best growers and different academic experts. We studied and analysed the soil, grapes and weather of different subzones. Anguix (Burgos) was finally selected as the ideal location and in 1991 we planted the vineyard on land we had purchased the previous year. The grapes from the first six harvests were sold. The first crop used to make wine, in 1999, did not meet our expectations. There was too much production that year and the resulting wine, which others may have accepted, was not approved by our oenologists and it was sold in bulk. In 2000, having verified the quality of the vineyard and the grapes, we built a winery representing a perfect combination of cutting-edge wine-making technology with a timeless and elegant design. That year saw the creation of our first Áster wine.
Winery Information: In the 1990s, La Rioja Alta decided to try their luck in the Ribera del Duero, where terroir and microclimate meet to invite the utmost expression of the Tempranillo grape. They sought the best possible site following the advice of the Denomination’s best growers and different academic experts. Also, La Rioja Alta studied and analysed the soil, grapes and weather of many different subzones. Anguix (Burgos) was finally selected as the ideal location and in 1991 they planted the vineyard on land that was purchased the previous year. They chose to name this new venture Bodegas Aster after a Spanish flower that blooms at harvest.
The grapes from the first seven harvests were sold. In 2000, having verified the quality of the vineyard and the grapes, a winery was built representing a perfect combination of cutting-edge wine-making technology and timeless elegance in design. That year saw the creation of the first Áster offering. " ~ Winery notes
