The Wine
"The 2017 was a sensational growing season after two consecutively cool, wet and generally challenging ones across Washington State (and frankly, the entire West Coast). There was no significant rain or cold snaps during harvest allowing us to pick when the fruit was good and ready. The Syrah was whole cluster fermented (as in, with stems) and the cabernet sauvignon whole berry fermented (without stems). The majority of the fermentations started spontaneously thanks to wild yeast, and all vineyard specific lots were fermented separately and underwent extended macerations, as opposed to immediately being pressed off. This allowed us to extract big, dark and chewy flavors from the start through the finish. All this intensity, texture and richness and just 13.6 alc by voI the magic of Washington states cool climate and long growing season! It's all Columbia Valley, WA fruit and largely from Goose Ridge and Milbrandt Vineyards. The final blend is 58 Cabernet Sauvignon and 42 Syrah. Total production is 48,000 cases."

Strong, bold, true and now named for our American Legion Post No. 35 this wine embodies traits we truly admire.

The Terroir
About 15,000 years ago the Columbia Valley was flooded by a series of ice age floods that deposited silt and sand over the entire area. The sediments deposited by the floods now make up the area's present-day sandy and gravelly soils. These conditions are ideal for grapevines and fruit development and allow all our vineyards to be planted on their own roots. The northerly latitude means more sunlight during the growing months which allows extended phenolic development, embodying unusual texture and naturally soft tannins. Large diurnal swings (30+ degrees on average between high and low temperatures) throughout the Columbia Valley ensures natural acidity and finesse.

THE PROJECT: A collaboration founded in 2008 between Food & Wine Magazine 2009 Winemaker of the year, Charles Smith (K Vintners, Charles Smith Wines) and Charles Bieler (Bieler Pere et Fils). The label is an abstract play on the American Flag done by the well loved and historic Nashville, TN poster shop, Hatch Show Print.

Charles Bieler and Charles Smith have teamed up on a delicious offering. Their collaboration--aptly named Charles and Charles--has yielded a single vineyard dry rosé and a red blend from the Wahluke Slope of Washington State.

Bieler has been making rosé in Provence, France with his family since 1992 and was one of the early champions of the category in the US. "In the late 90's it was only top tier shops that would carry any rosé at all," says Bieler, "and it took serious explanation to convince people that in fact not all pink wine was sweet. Now, every good restaurant and retailer loads up on at least a few for the warmer months. We've come a long way, baby."
