James Suckling 94
"A crazy blend of blackberry, blueberry, cloves, leather and dried flowers. Full body with great fruit and round tannins. Such depth and genuine character. Fresh too. Comes from ancient vines in the south of Chile. Head pruned. No barrels. Carignan, cinsault, touriga nacional, país, carmenere, malbec and syrah."

"I tasted the 2012 Cauquenina, a red blend that was bottled just one week ago and was suffering a little bit of bottle shock, was produced from old vineyards from granite soils, Pais, Cinsault from Itata, Malbec from 1914 from Biobio and Carignan and Carmenere (plus a 3% Touriga Nacional!) from Cauquenes. It is a complex, smoky, meaty blend, truly mineral and a little funky with savory notes in the palate, fine texture, polished tannins, very good acidity and weight. With time it develops flower and aromatic herb aromas and a pungent mineral sensation. This would be a great everyday wine. 1,500 cases produced. Drink the 2011 while you wait for this one. Drink 2015-2019.
Since 2008, Clos des Fous has been the playground for Pedro Parra outside his consulting work, together with Francois Massoc and a couple of new partners that joined them in 2009. The philosophy is to produce wines from stony soils in a very Burgundian style, without any corrections, all fermented with indigenous yeast, mostly in cement vats. They are developing new wines – so the best is yet to come. They produce a total of 120,000 bottles for now. I tasted the Pais component of the 2013 Itata blend, a light red that smells of chamomile and cola nut – very juicy and fresh, akin to drinking cotton candy. I also sampled the Malbec for the new future super-Cauquenes wine, which comes from a dry-farmed, head-pruned vineyard planted in 1914. Almost black, it had an alluring nose of violets and an electrifying palate. I look forward to tasting the bottled wine! This is a name to follow, one of the most exciting new projects in Chile."~Luis Gutierrrez

"Opaque ruby. An expansive, exotically perfumed bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, potpourri and smoky minerals, with subtle mint and tobacco nuances emerging with air. Taut and focused on entry, then fleshier in the mid-palate, offering juicy blackberry, cherry and violet pastille flavors and a touch of cola. Shows excellent clarity and lift on the finish, which features dusty tannins and a lingering floral note."~Josh Reynolds
"Clos des Fous is about four friends – four crazy guys that have chosen to ignore the “experts” about where to plant vineyards and to trust their own instincts. The team is viticulturist Paco Leyton, winemaker Francois Massoc, terroir hunter Pedro Parra, and “bringer of wisdom” Albert Cussen. Clos des Fous, at his heart, is a project dedicated to finding extreme terroirs in Chile and then exploiting those to craft unique wines. They focus on minimal intervention viticulture and winemaking, with the goal of allowing the terroir to express its natural balance and spirit. They are inspired by the wines of Burgundy, where both Pedro and Francois trained."
