Domaine du Cayron Gigondas Grenache 2016
Not Vintage Specific
Item Number: 31454
Vinous Media 93-95
"Brilliant ruby-red. Suave, highly perfumed raspberry, cherry preserve, floral pastille and apricot (!) aromas are complemented by hints of garrigue and exotic spices. Palate-staining, alluringly sweet red and blue fruit and spicecake flavors show serious power as well as vivacity thanks to a spine of juicy acidity. The floral quality comes back strong on a extremely long, sappy finish shaped by sneaky, slow-mounting tannins. -- Josh Raynolds"

"The 2016 Gigondas offers more density and reminds me of the 2010. Basil, crème de cassis, cracked pepper, and bay leaf notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, structured 2016 that has awesome purity of fruit. A blend of 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah and the rest Cinsault and Mourvèdre, brought up in foudre, it’s a classic wine from this estate that will keep for 10-15 years."

"The tank sample of this domaine's 2016 Gigondas is a bit more rustic than I'd like, with hints of sweaty leather and metallic notes on the finish. That said, it does offer attractive peppery notes, pomegranate and sour plum flavors and a full-bodied, creamy-textured mid-palate. If it doesn't worsen with time, it will be a fine, traditional Gigondas to drink over the next 6-7 years."
THE benchmark producer in Gigondas
78% Grenache, 14% Syrah, 6% Cinsault, 2% Mourvèdre
Grown on clay-limestone with southeast exposure
Aged in large older barrels
Unfined and unfiltered
Considered by many to be the benchmark producer in the appellation, Cayron produces a Gigondas (cepage = roughly 70% Grenache; 15% each Syrah and Cinsault and a drop of Mourvèdre for color) of phenomenal richness and incredible longevity. Their vines are on average 40+ years old with parcels up to 70 years old. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more terroir-expressive wine anywhere in the Southern Rhone; bold, explosive, stunningly evocative garrigues flavors careen from the glass, blaring their stamp of origin like a neon sign. These are old-styled, powerful wines of enormous fruit amplitude and irresistible personality. Furthermore, Cayron is among the most age-worthy of Gigondas, delicious upon release, but improving for well over a decade and holding strong for a long time thereafter. This 15-hectare domaine, run by the Faraud family, is a classic and truly top-flight estate. " ~ Winery notes
