"The Niederhuser 2020 Hermannshhle Riesling GG opens with a pure and fascinating mix of melting or crushed slate and ripe, concentrated white fruits. Vital and fresh on the palate, this is a racy, piquant and tensioned, almost irritatingly nervous but terroir-driven Riesling with stimulating salinity and a crystalline, very pure and challenging structure. 13% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in July 2021."
The Wine
Niederhaser Hermannshhle (clay-slate with limestone and volcanic veins) is the most famous vineyard in the Nahe. Regarded as the benchmark site for the region for over one hundred years, this 8.5ha conical-shaped hillside of slate, with bands of volcanic soil and limestone, rises up over a slight bend in the Nahe. Its the crown jewel of all vineyards in the region. Dnnhoffs wines are a shining example of what this site can produce, from the delicious Sptlese to the concentrated, yet electric Auslese Goldkapsel and the stunning Grosses Gewchs. Hlle means hole and the name Hermann is likely derived from Hermes, the messenger of the gods and patron of travelers. If Felsenberg is the god of thunder, then surely Hermannshhle is the god of wisdom.
Describing the flavor of the wines from Hermannshhle is probably best left to a taster who has yet to experience the wine; after tasting wines from this vineyard several times, the descriptions become quickly replaced with metaphors.
Several years ago Cornelius was asked by an excellent young taster who was traveling with us what are the markers for Hermannshhle? Cornelius waited a beat and said,
Although the Nahe is a dry region, Dönnhoff does not water their vineyards as to encourage deep rooted vines. The soil is covered with organic material like straw and compost to preserve water and to avoid evaporation and erosion in heavy rains. The vines are all grown on wire frames, low to the ground to benefit from the warmth of the stoney topsoil, and at a density of approx. 6000 vines per hectare. The Riesling vines are old clones sourced from the sites in Niederhausen and Schloßböckelheim.
Grapes are always picked by hand at Dönnhoff over 2-3 passes through each vineyard. To preserve laser-like focus and clarity in the wines, the grapes are pressed as soon as possible – within 3 hours of picking. Wines are fermented in traditional German casks (1200 L stuck and 2400 L doppelstuck) as well as stainless steel with spontaneous fermentations. Donnhoff's cellar is unique in its capacity to hold all of its production entirely in stainless steel or in cask, allowing for the ideal elevage for any wine at any point during a vintage.
