" had the chance to walk the Cannubi vineyard with Chiara Boschis this past fall. You really don't get a sense of how steep the inclines are and how powdery the soils are until you are there, struggling with each difficult step. She navigates the difficult terrain effortlessly. The 2019 Barolo Cannubi shows an etched or three-dimensional quality with sharp fruit flavors, blue flower and chalky stone. There were some weather extremes during the growing season, but everything balanced out in the end. Phenolic ripeness was easily achieved. Chiara Boschis describes 2019 as a cross between 2016 and 2017. In her portfolio, Via Nuova is the classic Barolo, Mosconi has the power and Cannubi shows the finesse of Nebbiolo."

Vinous Media 97
"The 2019 Barolo Cannubi is flat-out stunning. Rich and beautifully textured, the 2019 dazzles from start to finish. Freshly cut flowers, mint, crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, salt and dried herbs are some of the many notes that grace this exquisite, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Chiara Boschis. Sweet floral and spice overtones build into the finish. The precision here is unreal. Aging in cask works so well here. What a wine! -- Antonio Galloni"

The Wine
The Cannubi vineyard spans approximately 2.5 hectares and is situated at 300 meters in the village of Barolo. From a 0.7 hectare plot within the Cannubi vineyard, with south-southwest facing vines, the soils here are well-draining sandy clay marl with SantAgata limestone. Fermentation of this 100 Nebbiolo took place in stainless steel tanks with frequent pumping over. The wine was then aged in lightly toasted French oak (1/3 new, 1/3 second use, 1/3 three+ uses) for 24 months before aging an additional year in bottle. 800 cases produced.

The Estate
Chiara now has eleven hectares of vines under cultivation in the communes of Barolo, Serralunga and Monforte dAlba. She retains the honor of the first female winemaker in the Langhe, and though she came from a family of Barolisti, she braved incredible obstacles in the 1990s to earn that title. She is, by necessity, of unquestionable confidence, determination, patience and charm. She ran the estate essentially by herself for twenty years, but after the sale of Borgogno in 2008, her brother Giorgio became a free agent. In 2010, he, his wife Daniella and their three daughters joined Chiara at E. Pira, which provided not only a welcome division of labor, but also a next generation of female successors: Beatrice, Elena and Vittoria Boschis, Giorgio and Daniellas daughters, are already enjoying their experiences at the new family winery!

About E. Pira & Figli Estate
Chiara Boschis has some six hectares of vines under cultivation in the commune of Barolo, known for producing open, rich wines with great structure. She graduated with degree in economics but gained experience while working with her brothers at the historical Borgogno estate. As the first female winemaker in the Langhe, she is necessarily of unquestionable confidence, determination, patience and charm. She took over the reins at E. Pira e Figli in 1990 with a clear idea of what she wanted to accomplish: to marry the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability, enticing elegance, and lush, intense aromas. She achieves this goal through strict vineyard management, careful selection, and impeccable vinification techniques: shortened maceration, malolactic fermentation, and aging in barriques. Within the short time she has run the estate, she has quickly proved herself worthy of her peers, regularly garnering points well over 90 points from major international publications for all of her wines. Total annual production is a miniscule 2,000 cases. This is truly a rare gem of an estate.

Vineyard Management: Chiara Boschis was the first estate in Cannubi to convert to organic farming, but she didn't stop there! Chiara has worked tirelessly over the last few years to convince 21 of 26 growers in the district to become organic. Today, over 85% of Cannubi is farmed organically.
