Wine Advocate 98
"With fruit from Monforte d'Alba, the E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2019 Barolo Mosconi is the most powerful of the three wines presented here. We tasted it last. Bottled on the full August moon, the wine is impeccably balanced and bright with dark fruit, black cherry, spice and pencil shaving. The tannic structure of the wine is impressive, and you can count on Mosconi for long aging potential."

The 2019 Barolo Mosconi is a bit deeper in color, with its jeweled appearance leading to floral, fresh, and spicy notes of ripe cherry, pink peppercorn, and fresh rosemary. It is medium to full-bodied, with great purity, and has ripe, sweet tannins that fill the palate alongside balanced fruit, hints of forest floor, and a bit of cedar. It is long on the palate and needs more time. Drink 2025-2045.

Vinous Media 98
"The 2019 Barolo Mosconi is the most potent of the three Barolos in the range. It exudes Monforte darkness and virile intensity from the very first taste. Black cherry, plum, mocha, sage, tar, lavender and spice infuse the 2019 with tons of character. This is one of the most elegant wines I have ever tasted from Mosconi, a site that does not naturally lend itself to finesse.
- By Antonio Galloni on November 2022"

The Wine
Sourced from a 0.8 hectare plot within the Mosconi vineyard in Monforte dAlba. The average vine age here is 50 years old, all located at 370 meters above sea level with a south-facing exposure. After a two-week fermentation, the wine is then aged in lightly toasted French oak (1/3 new, 1/3 second use, 1/3 three+ uses) for 24 months before aging an additional year in bottle. 800 cases produced.

The Estate
Chiara now has eleven hectares of vines under cultivation in the communes of Barolo, Serralunga and Monforte dAlba. She retains the honor of the first female winemaker in the Langhe, and though she came from a family of Barolisti, she braved incredible obstacles in the 1990s to earn that title. She is, by necessity, of unquestionable confidence, determination, patience and charm. She ran the estate essentially by herself for twenty years, but after the sale of Borgogno in 2008, her brother Giorgio became a free agent. In 2010, he, his wife Daniella and their three daughters joined Chiara at E. Pira, which provided not only a welcome division of labor, but also a next generation of female successors: Beatrice, Elena and Vittoria Boschis, Giorgio and Daniellas daughters, are already enjoying their experiences at the new family winery!

Vineyard Management: E Pira Chiara Boschis was the first estate in Cannubi to convert to organic farming, but she didnt stop there! Chiara has worked tirelessly over the last few years to convince the rest of the growers in the district to become organic!

About E. Pira & Figli Estate
Chiara Boschis has some six hectares of vines under cultivation in the commune of Barolo, known for producing open, rich wines with great structure. She graduated with degree in economics but gained experience while working with her brothers at the historical Borgogno estate. As the first female winemaker in the Langhe, she is necessarily of unquestionable confidence, determination, patience and charm. She took over the reins at E. Pira e Figli in 1990 with a clear idea of what she wanted to accomplish: to marry the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability, enticing elegance, and lush, intense aromas. She achieves this goal through strict vineyard management, careful selection, and impeccable vinification techniques: shortened maceration, malolactic fermentation, and aging in barriques. Within the short time she has run the estate, she has quickly proved herself worthy of her peers, regularly garnering points well over 90 points from major international publications for all of her wines. Total annual production is a miniscule 2,000 cases. This is truly a rare gem of an estate.

Vineyard Management: Chiara Boschis was the first estate in Cannubi to convert to organic farming, but she didn't stop there! Chiara has worked tirelessly over the last few years to convince 21 of 26 growers in the district to become organic. Today, over 85% of Cannubi is farmed organically.
