The 2018 vintage shows an early exuberance in its red-cherry and raspberry flavors heightened by scents of rose petals and balsamic herbs. The tannins, while taut, are a bit softer and rounder in this vintage. Stephanie Johnson, December 2022

Wine Spectator 94
This is alluring for the strawberry, cherry and currant flavors, with details of iron, tar and tobacco. Starts out silky in texture, then the structure sneaks up on you as this red builds to a long finish. Bruce Sanderson, November 2022

Wine Advocate 94
The Elvio Cogno 2018 Barolo Ravera is becoming one of the most important wines in Novello, and it performs very nicely in this more challenging vintage. The wine shows small-berry detailing with rust and crushed stone at the back. There is a point of bitterness that accompanies the tannins of this full-bodied wine. Monica Larner

Contrary of the 2017 vintage, the 2018 was particularly rainy, especially during the first part of the growing season. The summer months were characterized by temperatures on average and the days before the harvest showed an excellent temperature range between day and night. These climatic conditions allowed us to produce elegant wines, with charming aromas and balanced taste, due to the soft touch of the tannic structure.

Tasting Notes
From Nebbiolo vines which reach 60 years of age, this Barolo Ravera captures the essence of the Ravera MGA of which it bears the name. The color is a bright garnet, which immediately refers to the grape variety. The nose, sweet and intense, is characterized by tasty notes of blackberry, ripe strawberry and cherry surrounded by floral, spicy, especially white pepper, and officinal herbs scents. The attack in the mouth is savory, a typical characteristic which is due to the vineyard of origin. Fresh and tasty on the palate, it is charming and satisfying thanks to silky tannins and depth of flavor, giving pleasant spicy hints which gradually leave room for a long fruity finish.
About Elvio Cogno Winery
The Elvio Cogno Winery produces the principle wines of the Langhe. The winery owns about fifteen hectares of vineyard property in Novello, one of eleven townships in the province of Cuneo in which Barolo DOCG production is allowed. The hills are world-renowned for their history, culture, and beauty, and they were recently recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage.

In the footsteps of its founder Elvio Cogno, today Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore direct the winery with four generations of winemakers and vine growers, dedicated to obtaining excellence that begins with the unique terroir to create wines that are famous throughout the world for their elegance, texture, and balance.

"You can make wine simply by buying the grapes for it. To work in the vineyards is another thing entirely. It means feeling a connection with the earth and its vital cycles of nature. Overall, it means transmitting the sense of this to your work." Valter Fissore

With four Barolo labels and eleven and a half hectares of vineyards in Ravera, Cogno is the most important producer of the Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva (MeGA) "Ravera." Ravera is the most well-known cru, or zone of vineyards, of Novello. It is recognized for producing wines that are able to withstand time while maintaining their aromas and freshness intact.

Strength, elegance, and noble smoothness. Elvio Cogno produces the great wines of the Langhe following traditional winemaking methods formed with the test of time. The wines are made according to the time scale of nature so that the extraordinary terroir of the vineyards is free to express its unique character, aroma, and color.

The winemaking methods use long, spontaneous fermentation, slow and never exaggerated extraction, a prudent use of submerged cap, large barrels, and the silence -- mysterious and full of anticipation -- of aging.

The wines of Elvio Cogno use technology sparingly, and only in support of the natural evolution of the wine, so that in every nuance, it carries the signature of the great cru of the family: Ravera.

The wines of Elvio Cogno draw their distinctive characteristics from this zone located in the township of Novello. The area has always been considered the best of its surrounding territory, and gives Elvio Cogno wines their uniqueness that, over time, has become a mark of distinction, their identifying character, and a symbol of the wisdom handed down over the generations.

Through the natural vineyard management and cellar methods, the wines reveal an elegant and graceful power, an enveloping smoothness, and an unexpected freshness accompanied by characteristic and pronounced aromas. The wines are ready to tell a new story every time, yet remain constant in their pride of their roots.
