"Wild berry, iris, rose and a potpourri of culinary spice aromas emerge on the nose of this stunning red. Radiant and full bodied, the palate is young and primary at this stage but already evokes morello cherry, licorice, pipe tobacco and aromatic herbs. Bright acidity and taut tannins provide impeccable balance and an impressive, age-worthy structure. Cellar Selection." Kerin O'Keefe, September 1, 2017

THE STORY Ravera is the name of the cru where the vineyard is located. This vineyard encircles the cellar, it is essentially the hillside vineyard surrounding the farm — the great, classic cru of Novello.

2013 VINTAGE NOTES The start of the spring was slow and characterized by low temperatures. Both April and May featured plenty of rainfall, with conditions prime for risks of fungi infections. In June and July, the weather turned favorably dry and sunny, producing very good and even flowering, followed by a generous fruit set. Despite the good weather in August and September, there was delay from the springtime that lasted to the harvest. All in all, the hot and dry days accompanied by the very cool nights created the perfect conditions for a very good phenolic ripening, especially on the Nebbiolo grape.

VINEYARDS Varietal Composition: 100% Nebbiolo da Barolo, Lampia and Michet (sub-varieties of Nebbiolo) Sources: 100% estate vineyards located on the top of the hill; Novello village; Ravera area Area: 5 hectares (12.35 acres) Exposure: South and southeast Altitude: 380 meters (1,246 feet) above sea level Soil Composition: Limestone and clay, with presence of sand Vine Age: 50-70 years old Vine Density: 4,000 vines/hectare (1,619 vines/acre) Cultivation: Vertical trellising, Guyot pruning, 100% organic (not yet certified)

VINIFICATION Fermentation: 100% in stainless steel, temperature-controlled, with automatic pump overs, post-fermentation maceration for 30 days with submerged cap; skin contact for 40-45 days with fermentation and afterwards, with post-fermentation maceration submerged cap; 100% with indigenous yeast Aging: 2 years barrel-aging in large, used Slavonian oak, followed by 1 year in bottle Cases Produced: 2,160 (6/750ml) Cases Imported: 650 Alcohol: 14.5%

TASTING NOTES The color is dark garnet red. The nose is elegant and complex with hints of small berries followed by rose petals, several balsamic notes, aromatic herbs and black tea leaves. On the palate it is full-bodied. The deep, velvety tannins are perfectly melted and the fresh acidity produces a very long and balanced aftertaste. The mouthfeel is like a symphony where all the instruments play in tune.

About Elvio Cogno Winery
The Elvio Cogno Winery produces the principle wines of the Langhe. The winery owns about fifteen hectares of vineyard property in Novello, one of eleven townships in the province of Cuneo in which Barolo DOCG production is allowed. The hills are world-renowned for their history, culture, and beauty, and they were recently recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage.

In the footsteps of its founder Elvio Cogno, today Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore direct the winery with four generations of winemakers and vine growers, dedicated to obtaining excellence that begins with the unique terroir to create wines that are famous throughout the world for their elegance, texture, and balance.

"You can make wine simply by buying the grapes for it. To work in the vineyards is another thing entirely. It means feeling a connection with the earth and its vital cycles of nature. Overall, it means transmitting the sense of this to your work." Valter Fissore

With four Barolo labels and eleven and a half hectares of vineyards in Ravera, Cogno is the most important producer of the Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva (MeGA) "Ravera." Ravera is the most well-known cru, or zone of vineyards, of Novello. It is recognized for producing wines that are able to withstand time while maintaining their aromas and freshness intact.

Strength, elegance, and noble smoothness. Elvio Cogno produces the great wines of the Langhe following traditional winemaking methods formed with the test of time. The wines are made according to the time scale of nature so that the extraordinary terroir of the vineyards is free to express its unique character, aroma, and color.

The winemaking methods use long, spontaneous fermentation, slow and never exaggerated extraction, a prudent use of submerged cap, large barrels, and the silence -- mysterious and full of anticipation -- of aging.

The wines of Elvio Cogno use technology sparingly, and only in support of the natural evolution of the wine, so that in every nuance, it carries the signature of the great cru of the family: Ravera.

The wines of Elvio Cogno draw their distinctive characteristics from this zone located in the township of Novello. The area has always been considered the best of its surrounding territory, and gives Elvio Cogno wines their uniqueness that, over time, has become a mark of distinction, their identifying character, and a symbol of the wisdom handed down over the generations.

Through the natural vineyard management and cellar methods, the wines reveal an elegant and graceful power, an enveloping smoothness, and an unexpected freshness accompanied by characteristic and pronounced aromas. The wines are ready to tell a new story every time, yet remain constant in their pride of their roots.
