"The 2014 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a fabulous wine at this level. Sweet spices, rose petal, mint and succulent cherry/plum notes all lift from the glass. Supple and beautifully layered throughout, the Sonoma Coast hits all the right notes. A final burst of fruit rushes across the palate on the refreshing, inviting wine. There is so much to like. -- Antonio Galloni"
"This cuvée is a blend of young-vine blocks from Failla's multiple Sonoma Coast appellation sources.
As always the winemaking method remains the same for the Sonoma Coast wines as the Vineyard Designates. Each of the lots were fermented separately and blended at bottling. Upon arriving to the winery, the fruit was destemmed and placed in open top fermenters and cold soaked for 5 days. Fermentation begins spontaneously with native yeasts and typically finishes in five days. Immediately following fermentation, the wine is barreled down by gravity. Roughly 15% new oak is used on each of the individual lots and aged sur-lie for 9 months.
The balance of the Sonoma Coast blend was sourced from mainly younger vines from the following vineyards: Keefer Ranch, Hirsch, Floodgate, Failla Estate, Sonoma Stage, and Whistler.
After cutting his winemaking teeth assisting a consultant in France's Rhone Valley during the difficult 1992 and 1993 vintages, Ehren Jordan went on to make powerful, ultra concentrated Petite Syrahs and Zinfandels for Turley Wine Cellars. The lessons he learned in France about maximizing ripeness in challenging conditions now serve Jordan and his wife, Anne-Marie Failla (pronounced FAY-la), at their 85-acre property on the Sonoma Coast, about 2.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Proximally located near such great producers as Marcassin, Flowers, Hirsch, Martinelli, and Peter Michael, Gualala Ranch provides an ideal growing climate for Failla’s chosen varietals. In addition to estate fruit, they also purchase grapes from such renowned vineyards as Alban, Keefer Ranch and Hirsch. Concentrating on small production Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah Failla’s wines are complex expressions of their environment.
Extremely active in local community interests Failla is also a founding member of the West Sonoma Coast Vintners (WSCV) association. They are in good company with other MSW alums such as; Paul Hobbs, LIOCO, Siduri, Ramey Wine Cellars, Ceritas, Peay Vineyards, and many others. " ~ Winery notes
