Wine & Spirits 96
“This is a monumental edifice composed of fruit from 100-year-old, a gran clos planted to granacha and carinena. In 2006, it’s blended with 12 percent cabernet sauvignon. The first thing you will notice is the wine’s structure, build to withstand an earthquake, while once inside, you might taste delicate notes of red fruit and spice, along with the minerality that build such a structure. The wine is powered by licorella soils, its flavors developing layers of complexity with air.”
"Vines, like people, often reach their peak in the face of adversity. This highly limited cuvée is hand made from 100-year-old vines that suffer daily to survive in dense slate soils on steep hillsides. Their fruit offers a unique mineral complexity that could come from no other place on earth and has done so since Carthusian monks first planted vines in Priorat in the 12th century (Priorat is the Catalan word for 'priory'). Serve Gran Clos with any grilled meat—especially beef and lamb—Serrano ham or aged cheeses such as Parmigiano, Manchego and Cheddar."
