" Another sensational effort under the Signature Series is the 2013 Zinfandel Dry Creek. This comes from some of their best vineyards including Monte Rosso, Stephani, Fox Ranch, Frei Ranch and Chiotti. It’s 87% sourced from Dry Creek and 13% from Sonoma Valley. The wine is 100% Zinfandel aged 16 months in three-quarters French oak and the balance in new American oak. It is a big boy at 16% natural alcohol, but there are only 485 cases of it. Classic California Zinfandel, with an inky bluish/purple color, and a stunning nose of licorice, charcuterie, spring flowers, pepper, black raspberries and black cherries. The wine is full-bodied, layered, pure and dense. This is a stunner and could compete with just about any top Zinfandel made in California. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
The flagship echelon of the enormous Gallo hierarchy of wines is represented by their handcrafted Signature wines as well as their Estate wines. These are all basically meant to showcase some great vineyard sites. The quantities of the Signature series range from a low 485 cases for the Zinfandel to just over 5,100 for the Cabernet Sauvignon. These are not huge quantities and the Estate wines are even smaller, with much more limited availability, from 120 cases of the Russian River Pinot Noir to a maximum of 350 cases for the Cabernet Sauvignon Northern Sonoma. These are all limited, but the pricing is fair and the wine quality impressive. " ~ RP
