" The Vire-Clesse from Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon is really lovely this year, with the very short crop load giving the wine an almost musky character on the nose that is very, very appealing. The bouquet is a mix of pear, nectarine, a touch of acacia blossom, chalky soil tones and a zesty topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, long and very suave on the attack, with a fine core, very good focus and balance and a long, vibrant and classy finish. Another really lovely bottle. "
" Starting with the 2009 vintage, Dominique leased 7ha form the Chateau de Viré. This is a historic vineyard that is extremely well situated on the hillside behind the village of Viré. The majority of the vineyard is planted with old vines, many of which are about 75 years old. The cuvee is from a selection of the best vines of the chateau.
Considered one of the finest winemakers in France, Dominique Lafon produces coveted white Burgundies from some of the greatest vineyards in the Cote de Beaune. Always hungry for new challenges, he purchased 14 hectares of vines in the Maconnais in 1999. He believes strongly in the potential of the region, but feels that too few vignerons have attempted to realize that potential. Thus, in the very same spirit he runs his renowned Meursault property, Dominique utilizes biodynamic viticulture, intense soil rejuvenation, tight yield control, and rigorous green harvesting to produce some of the most complex, vibrant and impressive wines the region has ever seen. WINEMAKER CAROLINE GON DELIVERS LASER PURE CHARDONNAY
Founded in 1999 by Dominique Lafon, Héritiers du Comte Lafon is his trailblazing, biodynamic Mâconnais domaine. These world class Chardonnay display what this magical region is capable of producing. Historically, the Mâconnais was known for industrially farmed, volume driven wines. Dominique was the first Cote d'Or producer to invest in the immense potential hidden in those rolling hills by buying higher altitude, old vine parcels with the intent of letting this beautiful terroir (perhaps the most picturesque wine region in the world) reach its full potential. He started by converting all of the vineyards to biodynamic farming –the Lafon way! Early on, he strived to preserve the fruit and minerality of the region by using only larger, neutral wood for the aging of the wines. His belief and passion for the region has made Héritiers a towering beacon for fine wine in the previously overlooked Chardonnay mecca. In 2006, he appointed longtime apprentice Caroline Gon as head winemaker of the domaine. Under her tireless and inspired leadership, the gospel of quality Mâconnais is spreading far and wide, with a clear and definitive voice.
