Hermann Wiemer 'HJW Vineyard' Riesling 2014
Not Vintage Specific
Wine Advocate 94+
"The 2014 Riesling "HJW Vineyard" is one of the wines that actually pushes the price point in the Finger Lakes. That's because it is from one of the most prestigious sites, Wiemer's original vineyard (planted in 1978 on largely shale soils). It is also a statement Riesling. Dry, this opens with big acidity and plenty of mid-palate concentration. It is clearly designed to age and not necessarily designed to be drunk very young. Its brilliant precision and focus coupled with a persistent and gripping finish make this seem like a very big wine, but in other respects it has all that Mosel-like finesse. HJW is also typically the coldest part of the winery's plantings. The terrific core of concentrated fruit is supported and lifted by the freshness this site imparts. That makes this a Riesling with remarkable potential, perhaps even more than I suspect. It should age brilliantly, too. We haven't begun to see what this wine can do yet. Come back in a decade or so, preferably, but please give it a few years. It might yet be entitled to an uptick."
Planted in 1976, our HJW Vineyard features Hermann’s original plantings on Seneca Lake. Mature vines, combined with the site’s shallow topsoil and shale bedrock, produce lower yields, resulting in expressively vibrant flavors. Higher elevation and a greater distance from Seneca Lake contribute to a cooler growing season, resulting in a leaner, more austere wine with intense flavor and an excellent aging potential. These core characteristics of the HJW vineyard are expressed in this exclusive vineyard-specific wine. Invigorating crispness and an appealing balance of flavors combine with an unprecedented minerality, which carries into an impressive and enduring finish.
