Item Description

"This wine is going to become one of those once-a-year things where it's only available for maybe three months and then you have to wait till the next vintage. We ship all the estate-bottled wine they will give us. We used to continue with another cuvee from purchased organic fruit, but the problem is this fruit has taken such sharp price increases that we couldn't hold our own line. The wine is scrupulous, correct, herbal, maybe just a little lean but with good peppery spice and decent length."

The Wine
Certified organic, Estate grown fruit from Auersthal in the Weinviertel region of Austria. Fermented in stainless steel, this liter continues to be one of the most successful in the US market and is the original Bio-liters. The style here tends to be on the more crisp and green side of the variety. This is a perfect by the glass GV selection or weeknight wine for savvy wine drinkers customers looking for an easy drinking white wine thats a delicious and quaff-able, but full of character.

Auersthal is just barely beyond Viennas northern suburbs, in a dead-still little wine village in the Weinviertel. Hofer belongs to a group called Bio-Ernte which has standards above the EU guidelines. The vineyards lie in a rain-shadow and have to endure hot summers. In fact Hofer plants his Riesling in a fog-pocket as he gets so little rain. The wines are pressed conventionally (no whole-cluster) with skin contact, and all whites are done in stainless steel." ~ Winery notes

The Estate
The Hofer family farms vineyards in Auersthal, a dead-still little wine village in the Weinviertel, just barely beyond Viennas northern suburbs. The gently rolling hills in in this village are made up of deep loess soils and are planted predominantly to grner veltliner, in addition to some zweigelt and riesling. Additionally, the Hofers grow organic grains; rye, barley, and alfalfa. These grains are raised for consumption, and are used as cover-crops in their vineyards.

There was a time when only a small amount of wine was produced at the farm of Hermann Hofers parents, but the quality was worthy enough to motivate Hermann to increase production and begin making top-quality wine. Hofer has been making wine since the early 1980s and has been certified organic since 2001 by the group Bio-Ernte, whose standards exceed EU guidelines for organic grape growing.

It is rare to find such high quality wines farmed with such attention and responsibility, especially in the Weinvertel, Austrias largest growing region and home to many commodity-wine producers. In the cellars at Hofer grapes are de-stemmed, macerated for only a short time, and then vinified in stainless steel with the goals of typicity and freshness in mind.
