"The 2021 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is floral with perfume and ripe red berries, as well as notes of framboise, rosemary, and incense. Offering fantastic balance, with fine tannins, fresh seamless acidity, and a good purity of fruit, this is a very attractive wine now and will continue to provide prime drinking over the next 12 or more years."

"The 2021 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast was matured in 39% new oak for 15 months. The nose opens slowly from allspice and brown sugar to a core of red cherry and cranberry, tea leaves and lavender. The medium-bodied palate offers surprisingly concentrated fruit supported by grainy tannins and seamless freshness, and it has a long, spicy finish."

Tasting Notes
"This richly tight, layered and intense coastal wine combines grapes from several amazing sites, including Kanzler, Gap's Crown and Jenkins. Savory freshness defines it, with mineral, forest and tea at the forefront of the structured palate and accents of nutmeg and cardamom lingering on the finish."

The Wine
With idyllic weather from start to finish, 2021 was one of the finest growing seasons of the past decade. Each wine within the Appellation Series embodies the unique qualities we cherish from the regions we work with.

The Sonoma Coast appellation overlaps with that of the Russian River Valley in many places and is similarly shaped by the ocean. Local geology can be complex here, a direct result of being located on the intersection of two tectonic plates. For this wine, we find ourselves drawn to vineyards that are particularly influenced by the Pacific Ocean and are fortunate to work with some spectacular sites. Together, they form a singular wine that is distinctively Sonoma Coast.

The vineyards we source from lie in both the southern portion of the appellation and in the northern true coastal zone. In the southern area, the Petaluma Wind Gap and the San Pablo Bay drive cooler temperatures and provide us with deep flavors and richly textured wines. The vineyards from the coastal reaches contribute savory and spice characteristics that we love as well as great structure and poise. This year, the cooler sites such as Marshall and Balletto were able to have long hang times and were the last to be picked. The fruit had excellent development of tannins and dark, rich fruit profiles. Blackberry and raspberry complemented the great depth and long finish.
About Kosta Browne
Kosta Browne began as a dream shared by Dan Kosta and Michael Browne. In the summer of 1997 Dan and Michael decided to venture into winemaking. They saved tip money for two months and eventually had enough to buy a half ton of Pinot Noir, a used barrel and an old hand-crank stemmer-crusher, a purchase that marks the beginning of Kosta Browne. Since that vintage, they have nurtured relationships with the best growers and honed their winemaking skills, making sure to focus on the vision and values with which they began.

Today, Dan, Michael and founding partner Chris Costello work very closely to maintain the quality and consistency of the entire Kosta Browne experience. In 2011, only a short amount of time since their first bottling in 2000, Kosta Browne was heralded as the top Pinot Noir produced in California, (2009 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir). This accomplishment exhibits the development of Kosta Browne's importance to the region and the exceptional level of their wines.

"Flavorful, intense wines – that is our goal. We believe every wine should be bursting with flavor. This intensity should be part of a greater balance. We find that each of our vineyards has its own "sweet spot" of balance. It is our charge to guide each vineyard to its optimum flavor potential. Our single vineyard wines are blended to express the specific qualities and consistencies of our pedigreed vineyards. Pinot Noir is the perfect palate to define the terroir of these plantings. We offer two appellation wines: our Sonoma Coast and Russian River. These wines are blended to represent the best of our vineyards in each specific appellation. Quality is of utmost importance with these blends."
