Tasting Notes
"Bright, fresh notes of pomegranate, rhubarb, orange, and raspberry complement a touch of subtle toast. In the mouth it's approachable and commanding entry with a pleasurable mid-palate and a long, rich, thorough finish."

The Wine
With idyllic weather from start to finish, 2018 was one of the finest growing seasons of the past decade. Each wine within the Appellation Series embodies the unique qualities we cherish from the regions we work with.

Located on the eastern slopes of the coastal range that shelters the fertile Salinas Valley from Big Sur, this appellation is relatively new with the first vineyards being developed only in the 1970s. Surprisingly, these central coast slopes are generally cooler than the Russian River Valley, largely as a result of the ocean breezes and fog coming in from Monterey Bay. The vineyards are sheltered by the coastal peaks that limit rainfall. Pinot Noir excels on these hillsides - which is why our travels took us here.

During the 2018 vintage, the Santa Lucia Highlands had the lowest highs seen in a long time which resulted in being a week or two behind normal. This allowed for significant hang-time and thus, phenolic development, higher acids and a burst of red fruit notes like pomegranate, raspberry, and rhubarb. This Pinot Noir is commanding yet, approachable.
About Kosta Browne
Kosta Browne began as a dream shared by Dan Kosta and Michael Browne. In the summer of 1997 Dan and Michael decided to venture into winemaking. They saved tip money for two months and eventually had enough to buy a half ton of Pinot Noir, a used barrel and an old hand-crank stemmer-crusher, a purchase that marks the beginning of Kosta Browne. Since that vintage, they have nurtured relationships with the best growers and honed their winemaking skills, making sure to focus on the vision and values with which they began.

Today, Dan, Michael and founding partner Chris Costello work very closely to maintain the quality and consistency of the entire Kosta Browne experience. In 2011, only a short amount of time since their first bottling in 2000, Kosta Browne was heralded as the top Pinot Noir produced in California, (2009 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir). This accomplishment exhibits the development of Kosta Browne's importance to the region and the exceptional level of their wines.

"Flavorful, intense wines – that is our goal. We believe every wine should be bursting with flavor. This intensity should be part of a greater balance. We find that each of our vineyards has its own "sweet spot" of balance. It is our charge to guide each vineyard to its optimum flavor potential. Our single vineyard wines are blended to express the specific qualities and consistencies of our pedigreed vineyards. Pinot Noir is the perfect palate to define the terroir of these plantings. We offer two appellation wines: our Sonoma Coast and Russian River. These wines are blended to represent the best of our vineyards in each specific appellation. Quality is of utmost importance with these blends."
