Wine Spectator 95
" An impressive red of breadth and depth, featuring black cherry, plum, leather, earth, iron and cedar aromas and flavors. This is solidly built and well-balanced, with finely honed tannins and lively acidity providing backbone. Best from 2021 through 2040."
Grapes are first selected during harvest in the vineyard and then by an optical sorter when they arrive at the winery; they are destemmed and the whole berries are immediately put into French oak fermenters. The temperature during fermentation is computer controlled, the must is kept in contact with the skins for about 30 days where manual pigeage and remontage are carried out frequently, throughout the day every 4-6 hours and one delestage is performed per week. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barriques (70 new and 30 used one year). The wine matures for 24 months in barriques (70 new and 30 used one year) and then for 36 months in bottle.
Origin of wine and name, as per the owner of this brand and the vineyards from which the grapes are grown for this wine:
Don't play everything, let some things go by. What you don't play can be more important than what you do". -Thelonious Sphere Monk Upon tasting the 2013 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon with a friend of Banville at the Tolaini Estate, Lia Banville was struck by the grace and opulence of the wine in barrel. The two agreed that this wine was special and should be bottled as a single varietal with its' unique harmony of distinct terroir, robust bright fruit, and lush round tannins. A truly LEGIT Cabernet Sauvignon from within Chianti Classico, UNBLENDED. With the idea of pursuing the name LEGIT, Lia envisioned a label dedicated to the single person who embodied stylish originality and eternal hipness, an artist referred to as the "Genius of Modern Music" - Thelonious Monk. After further research the choice seemed ordained to be, as Lia's son Alex found an iconic photo gracing the album cover of one of Monk's most famous live concert recordings. 'Thelonious Monk in Italy' recorded live April 21st, 1961 in Milan by Riverside Records. Thus began the quest to receive permission from the photographer and Monk's family to use the iconic photo for the LEGIT label. An adventure that was born as a business endeavor, evolved into collaboration, and has grown into a wonderful friendship. We are proud to offer this wine as a tribute to the timelessness of Monk's music. Pulitzer Prize winner, respected composer (his single "Round Midnight" is the most recorded Jazz single to date) AND who today is still referred to as the epitome of Jazz, Thelonious Monk has and will always set the bar for all things LEGIT!

"Don't play everything, let some things go by. What you don't play can be more important than what you do".
A philosophy of a musician whose enduring legacy continues to inspire listeners, artists and artisans around the world. Music, the language of soul, universally understood and appreciated in spite of borders and barriers. Indeed its rhythm transcends those things and makes our collective hearts to beat as one. We argue that wine has a similar ability. The grapes each a note in a composition written in a universal language. The author, an artisan improvising with practiced deft, not playing everything, letting some things go by. Little wonder then that when Tuscan vintner and international wine importer Lia Tolaini Banville met the grandchildren of the great Thelonious Monk, she was inspired to a collaboration to honor his memory with a singular wine from her family estate - LEGIT.
