Tones of clove, bay leaf and sage ride over a core of big black fruit in this youthfully tannic wine. An accent of tobacco arises on the midpalate and leads to a robust, lasting peppery finish.
" Deep, rich flavors of plum, cherry compote, fig and cranberry weave through those layers of spice that include cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. They are all accented by earthy truffle notes in a full, long finish. This dense, rich and well-structured wine is held together beautifully by polished, assertive tannins. The depth and structure show the wine’s potential to age gracefully a decade or more.
The grapes were harvested in the early morning to keep the fruit cool while it was destemmed and sent directly to tank. The lots were cold soaked for two days before fermentation at temperatures of 88°F to 90°F, and the wine was pumped over up to three times a day. Every lot was evaluated separately as they aged, then blended together and further aged in barrels to allow the flavors to marry. The wine aged a total of 17 months in a combination of French and American oak (43% new).
The majority of fruit comes from the hilly Barrelli Creek Vineyard on the west side of Alexander Valley, a region winemaker Michael Eddy calls a hidden gem for Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard has well-drained, rocky and gravelly soils that heighten the intensity of fruit. " ~ Winery notes
