"Livio Voghera's excellent Barbaresco in 2016 is surpassed by this splendid wine, even though it comes from hail-damaged Neive. The upfront raspberry-scented nose is not overtly fruity but it's beguiling and ripe. The attack is fresh, silky and poised, very concentrated but not too extracted, and the tannins are polished. There's a delicate sucrosity on the finish, which is balanced and very long. Drinking Window 2020 - 2035"

The Wine
100 Nebbiolo sourced entirely from two parcels (a total of three hectares) in the Cotta vineyard, the oldest property under the Voghera familys ownership. The vines of one parcel are 30-years-old and the second parcel up to 60-years-old, situated 230-250 meters above sea level with a southwest exposure. Fermentation-maceration occurs in stainless steel for 10 to 15 days, and then the wine is then racked into 3HL and 5HL casks for two years of aging. Approximately 1,400 cases produced annually.
The Estate
The Voghera family have been farmers in Neive in Barbaresco as far back as time remembers. They grew grapes for a modest production of family wine, but also cultivated grain and fruit trees. The estate as we know it today was born in 1974, when Luigi Voghera, the father of the current owner, dedicated his farm entirely to the production of grapes and started to vinify and bottle his own production. Luigis son Livio adheres to his fathers old-school and time-tested methods of production: longer maceration on the skins, and aging in large oak cask. We were consistently impressed by Livios offeringsall estate bottled, and across the board tremendous values. But what sealed the deal was our discovery of a small (and delicious) vertical of Barbaresco Basarin going back to 2007! Youll delight in these cellar-aged treasures just as we have!
