"This large winery in Mendoza, Argentina makes numerous wines under the Maipe, Chakana and Cueva de las Manos labels. Almost all of them represent good values. The 2013 Maipe Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, primarily aged 12 months in French oak, although about one-third of the fruit is aged in concrete. This lush wine is a terrific value in Cabernet Sauvignon, but unfortunately, only 3,000 cases are available in America. Its deep ruby color is accompanied by uncomplicated notes of blackcurrants, licorice and a touch of vanilla. Medium-bodied, straightforward, delicious and surprisingly concentrated for a wine in this price range, it should drink well for 3-6 years. It is not easy to find Cabernet Sauvignon for under $25 a bottle at this quality level, but this 2013 delivers. - Robert Parker"

" A ripe, fleshy style, with blackberry and fig sauce notes laced with bittersweet Grenache. Powerful and layered, with classic Cabernet aromatics. Dark and ripe, with a nice loamy edge lurking on the finish. " ~ Winery Notes
About Maipe
Maipe was the lord of the winds to the ancient Andean people. The wines are produced by Bodegas Chakana in the Luján de Cuyo subregion of Mendoza. Juan Pelizzatti founded Chakana on May 2, 2002 the day The Souther Cross (Chakana in Mapuche) reaches a perfectly vertical position, marking the beginning of a new farming cycle.

Their vineyards are are both in Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, in the foothills of the Andes Mountains at an altitude of 3,000 feet above sea level. Agrelo is a cool climate region in Argentina's premier grape growing area. Their three fincas are home to some very special plots of 100+ year old Malbec vines. Currently the estate is in the process of a Biodynamic viticulture conversion and certification. Winemakers Gabriel Bloise, Liliana Iannizzotto and consultant Alberto Antonini are crafting wines that are an expression of old vines, deep rich soils and a commitment to excellence.
