GROWING YEAR
The growing year in 2014 was the third dry year in a row and was full of unforeseen challenges provided by Mother Nature. You would think the ongoing drought, excessive heat from March thru June, and hail in early April would have brought down the quality of this vintage. Thankfully this was not the case! Even though the harvest was very early, the small berry sizes and healthy yields have produced very well balanced wines; they are not over-bearing in tannin or structure, and are a pleasure to drink.

VINEYARD CHARACTERISTICS
The Russian River Valley is among the world’s most exceptional terroir & climate for
Pinot Noir. Our estate-grown single vineyards are recognized for being uniquely
expressive on their own. We have learned that when blended, we can create a wine
combining beautiful structure and ripeness. “Bella Vigna” translates in Italian to
Beautiful Vines, not only because of their location in the Russian River Valley but also
for the wine they produce.

WINE STATISTICS
The grapes are picked between 25 and 27 degrees brix to ensure mature ripe fruit flavors. After picking, the whole berries undergo a long cool fermentation with wild yeast, to generate skin contact and expose fruit character. The juice is transferred into oak barrels with a touch of residual sugar remaining to complete the fermentation process in barrel until dry. It rests in 70% new French oak on its gross lees for one year. The wine is neither heat nor cold stabilized, and is un-fined and un-filtered, clarified only by racking before bottling.

About Martinelli Winery
The Martinelli family has been growing grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1887. At the ages of 19 and 16, Giuseppe Martinelli and Luisa Vellutini left their small village in the Tuscany region of Italy and made their way to California looking for land to farm and start a winery. Giuseppe had been a winemaker in Italy and with his viticultural knowledge he was hired to plant a vineyard for a farmer in Forestville. 100 years later, the historic Martinelli Estate vineyards are farmed by Lee Martinelli, Sr., and sons Lee, Jr. and George Martinelli. The wines are made by winemaker Bryan Kvamme. These handcrafted wines are unfined, unfiltered, neither cold nor heat stabilized and may contain naturally occurring sediment.

Very good
"Nice light color. Great nose of spice, vanilla. On the palate a beautiful sweetness. Tart cherry. Sour candy. BBQ smoke. Lingers so softly. Nice mild round tannins. Great wine. 92pts 2014 vintage"
