"Certified organic. 58% Grenache, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Mourvèdre, 6% Cinsault , 5% Syrah.

This storied domaine, run with passion and skill by Luc and Lucienne Cartier, has been farming and making wine organically for decades. Their gorgeous property in the beautiful countryside appellation of Les Baux de Provence yields powerful expressions of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, and more – not to mention olives (their oil is one of France’s finest), and incredible fruit and vegetables. Luc and Lucienne’s wines combine the richness and intensity of top Rhone or Bordeaux with a crystal-clear and unmistakable expression of Provençal soil." ~ Winery notes

The rich scents of the Mediterranean are at their most expressive in autumn -- the earthy aromas of flowering rosemary, wild sage and juniper, the mountain freshness of the brisk Mistral winds. All these elements are echoed in the estate's red wines.

What's more, the intense flavors of even Mas de Gourgonnier's rosé wine speak to its red-wine origins -- in contrast to the region's often diluted and simple rosés. As Provençal farmers will claim (and hearty Provençal cuisine requires), the great wines of the region have always been red blends.

So great, in fact, that not only are Mas wines enjoyable young but also are exceptional with cellar age. Smart collectors purchase cases of Mas de Gourgonnier Rouge every vintage, to enjoy the wines over 10 years and beyond. There are few wines that offer as much pleasure for such a modest investment.

Mas de Gourgonnier was one of the first two wineries North Berkeley Wine chose for its company portfolio more than 30 years ago. In this unassuming appellation, the integrity and consistency of Mas de Gourgonnier’s values, methods and products mirrored the working principles that we wanted for our company -- and is why Mas has remained an steadfast partner ever since.

"I'm not normally a rose drinker, but decided to taste several bottles this season to expand my horizons. Compared to three other bottles from Empire and two others from my local Costco all ranging between $10 and $17, this stands out as my #1. Simple, flowery, crisp and a little citrus, it is the best value proposition for me."
