"The entirely tank-matured 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Calvaire is an open, flattering effort that boasts impressive complexity. Peppery spices mark the nose, alongside notes of mixed berries, leather and garrigue, while the full-bodied palate is expansive and velvety. Hints of leather join star anise and black cherries on the finish. It's a strong effort, which should drink well for at least 6-7 years."

"A blend from various terroirs of the appellation, Clos du Calvaire is unpretentious—a pure expression of a true Châteauneuf du Pape, aged in concrete vat to preserve the authenticity of its predominant grape variety, Grenache. This is a fine traditional wine with an aroma of red berries and an intense liquorice bouquet, elegantly structured, full-bodied and rich on the palate. A great value in the wonderfully fresh 2018 vintage. With a dynamic history and an eye toward the future, the Vignobles Mayard is putting out naturally farmed wines with finesse, class and a freshness and lift that elude so many of today’s Châteuneuf-du-Pape."~Distributor Notes

"Having been pleasantly bowled over by the performance of the wines from Vignobles Mayard in my blind tastings last year, I was glad to visit this year. Consultant Philippe Cambie has been working with the sister-run domaine since 2011, but it seems to me that quality has taken off in the past couple of years now that the vineyards are being converted to organic farming. The family owns 41 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, divided among 40 separate parcels. Sounds like a lot of tractor-driving! Élevage is in concrete or foudre, giving the fruit an opportunity to shine. This is one Châteauneuf du Pape estate where prices haven't yet caught up with the increasing quality."~Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate

“These consistently reliable Chateauneuf-du-Papes are always representative of Provence, and are made in a rich, earthy, peppery, fruity style with plenty of body as well as Chateauneuf-du-Pape typicity."~Robert Parker

Mayard"This 5th generation estate is run by Françoise Roumieux, along with her sister Béatrice, and brother Didier. Their family estate is comprised of 40 separate parcels scattered throughout the appellation. The largest pieces are located in the south of the appellation and the northeastern sub-zone of "La Crau." The diversity of soils and terroirs gives them the opportunity to blend and create a "best of vintage" offering for each of their three Châteauneuf cuvées. We will be working with their entry-level, "Clos du Calvaire" and their old-vines called, "La Crau de Ma Mère", both starting with the 2007 vintage.

Robert Parker recently described the wines: "These consistently reliable Chateauneuf du Papes are always representative of Provence, and are made in a rich, earthy, peppery, fruity style with plenty of body as well as Chateauneuf du Pape typicity. Not generally wines to lay away, rather, they are to consume during their first 10-12 years of life, with the only exception being certain vintages of the top cuvée, La Crau de Ma Mère."
