Complex aromas of ripe cherries, black truffles and dried flowers, such as lavender and rose petals. Full-bodied, tight and solid with chewy tannins, yet it’s polished and refined. Undertones of porcini mushrooms and walnut rind. Energetic and focused. Drinkable now, but better in 2022.

The Mazzei 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is Sangiovese with a tiny part Merlot and other complementary varieties. Compared to the other releases in this portfolio, Ser Lapo comes across as slightly flashier and more contemporary. It opens to dark and concentrated fruit, with soft spice and tobacco backed by cherry and sun-ripened blackberry. Subtle notes of campfire ash and scorched earth also appear. Like some of the other 2017 wines presented by the Mazzei family, the mouthfeel is thinner and more streamlined than anticipated.
With this outstanding Chianti Classico Riserva, the Marquis Mazzei celebrate their notable ancestor Ser Lapo, author of the first official document mentioning “Chianti wine”. Ruby red color with violet nuances. On the nose, bright aromas of fresh cherries mingle with notes of thyme and a subtle smoky character. Bright acid structure providing a lively quality. Cranberry, raspberry, and red cherry dominate with hints of leather, cedar, and cocoa powder. Some earthiness in the finish and ripe soft tannins.
Food pairings include pasta with game sauce, stews, grilled red meats, and mid-aged cheeses.

ABOUT THE WINERY
The spectacular Fonterutoli hamlet – which includes a cluster of houses, the church of San Miniato and the 16th century family villa – today comprises 470 hectares, of which 79 hectares are devoted to four distinct vineyard sites: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola and Belvedere. The Sangiovese grape finds itself particularly at home in these four areas, which are planted at altitudes varying between 750 and 1,640 feet above sea level, at south and southwest exposure. The rocky limestone and sandstone soil structure, high density planting (7,000 plants per hectare) and low yields of less than 40 hectoliters per hectare result in the production of complex, elegant and powerful Sangiovese wines.
