" We are brimming with excitement to tell you about a new brand, founded by Steve Kistler, founder and winemaker of Kistler Vineyards. It is called Occidental.
Occidental Wines is a new, all-Pinot Noir project which had its genesis about 14 years ago when Steve realized that the future for producing great Pinot Noir in California lay in the very cool sub-climate of the West Sonoma Coast, just 3 or 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Having located a perfectly-situated ridgetop above the cold fog line, he planted a pioneering 17-acre-vineyard which would become the source for the renowned Kistler “Cuvée Catherine” and “Cuvée Elizabeth” Pinot Noirs. In 2008, Steve bought a 100-acre piece of land, geologically very similar to the existing Cuvée Catherine and Cuvée Elizabeth vineyards - and about 1,000 feet away from them. The idea behind this project was for Steve to create a small project of his own with an eye towards his future and that of his family. He remains very much involved as CEO of Kistler Vineyards.
Since purchasing these new parcels, Kistler has planted 45 additional acres of Pinot Noir on this prime territory. In 2012, Steve built a state-of-the-art pinot noir production facility in the midst of these new vineyards, and from 2013 forward, all Occidental Wines will be made in this facility. In 2011, the team made the first Occidental Wines at Kistler Vineyards winery in Sebastopol, the 2011 Occidental “Cuvée Catherine” and “Cuvée Elizabeth” Pinot Noirs. Production was small and only sold via their mailing list.
Total production of Occidental Wines will top out at 7500 cases. Beginning with the outstanding 2012 vintage, Steve produced the Catherine and Elizabeth cuvees, and these cuvees will no longer be produced as part of the Kistler portfolio. In addition, Steve made a small amount of Sonoma Coast appellation Pinot Noir which is truly exquisite.
As per our privileged position with Kistler Wines, we are one of the few markets in the country that will be able to offer you these wines. Don’t hesitate on this. " ~ Winery notes

Steve Kistler, founder and winemaker of Kistler Vineyards for 37 years, has established a new pinot noir brand "Occidental" which is owned and operated by the Kistler family. Occidental is dedicated to the production of world-class pinot noir from the Freestone-Occidental area.
Occidental built a state-of-the-art winery on a ridge top next to the Bodega Headlands Vineyard overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Peak capacity is planned to be 7500 cases of pinot noir. The new winery was completed in August of 2013 just in time for the harvest.
Currently, Occidental produces three vineyard designated pinot noirs: Bodega Headlands, SWK Vineyard, and Occidental Station and a Sonoma Coast bottling. These extreme coastal sites are among the coldest and latest ripening vineyards in the Freestone-Occidental area.
