About the Winery
Ottosoldi is a young Piedmontese winery founded by two talented and passionate brothers, Stefano and Massimo Moccagatta. Their grandfather, who purchased the small plot of land they now cultivate to make this very wine, referred to the land as Otto soldi' (eight coins), the expression signifying that it was worth a fortune. In honor of his story, they named their flagship Gavi "Ottosoldi".
The Ottosoldi estate is in the town of Serravalle Scrivia, surrounded by the rolling hills of Gavi, a place rich in wonderful vineyard sites and fascinating landscapes. This area of southeastern Piedmont benefits from a mild climate due to Mediterranean influence.
The Ottosoldis vineyards cover about 5 hectares, at 250 to 300 meters above sea level and represent one of the most unique terroirs of Monferrato, with a mix of marl and limestone that gives a wonderful richness and freshness to their Gavi. The vineyard is currently in the process of transitioning to organic farming. The average age of the vines is around 20 years old, with a southwest exposure, ideal for achieving the proper ripeness of Cortese. All the grapes are harvested by hand. Only about 50,000 bottles are produced, including a Gavi DOCG, a Metodo Classico Spumante (both 100% Cortese) as well as a Barbera del Monferrato.
