"While Peay's Syrah La Bruma is accessible today, the 2017 Syrah Estate Les Titans is anything but. Powerful and tightly wound, Les Titans shows the more savory side of Syrah. Inky dark fruit, cured meats, black pepper, sage, smoke and grilled herbs infuse the 2017 with striking varietal character. Bold and pungent, with tons of Syrah character, the Titans dazzles from the very first taste. I won't be surprised if it is even better in another few years' time. For now, though, the 2017 is one of the most austere, young Titans I can remember tasting. -- Antonio Galloni"

Wine Advocate 94
"Medium to deep ruby-purple, the 2017 Estate Syrah Les Titans opens very slowly in the glass, revealing layers of nuance with time: coffee, bitter chocolate and mint leaves emerge from fresh blackcurrant fruit with notes of iron, dried violets, lavender and aniseed. The medium to full-bodied palate is firm and grainy with bright pops of freshness and crunchy, peppery fruits, finishing long and understated. This is a bit less flashy than its 2016 counterpart but lovely just the same. 275 cases were made."

The Wine
Just from the color you can tell the 2016 Les Titans Syrah will be magnificent; it has an electric psychedelic purplish glow hinting at the energy present in the wine. The nose is a complete knockout with iron, grilled meat, hickory smoke, ink, and pain grill aromas. The mouth is consistent with the nose combining power and precision. The finish is long and clean with great acidity and lingering notes of violets and squid ink. The Les Titans has everything you could hope for in cold climate Syrah with grace and focus and none of the one dimensional, heavy, leaden quality found in lesser wines. I suggest you drink a bottle upon release to see what is so exciting and then open a few every few years to watch it evolve into the single best Les Titans and maybe even Syrah we have ever made.

The Estate
Peay Vineyards farms on a ridge top above a river gorge in the northwestern corner of the true Sonoma Coast 4 miles from the chilly Pacific Ocean. A consistent afternoon ocean wind, placement in the cool inversion layer and ancient marine soils allow them to produce wines of elegance, intensity and focus.

Peay Vineyards is a family-run business started from scratch in 1996. They planted the first 30 acres of the 54 acre vineyard in 1998 with the remaining planted in 2001 and 2008. They grow and produce estate-only Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, Viognier and Roussanne/Marsanne. 2002 was the first vintage. Peay Vineyards is a first generation family winery started in 1996. Husband and wife, Nick Peay & Vanessa Wong, grow and make the wine and brother, Andy Peay, sells the wine and runs the business. Vanessa Wong was formerly winemaker at Peter Michael Winery. They sell fruit to a handful of premier wineries, but a majority of their fruit goes into their own bottlings.

The Peay family farms organically and maintains their certifications for fish-friendly farming and integrated pest management. The health of the vineyard dictates these approaches to farming and making wine. They also run on bio-diesel at the vineyard and solar power at both the vineyard and winery.
