Bright ruby. Aromas of ripe red fruit, sage and mint. It is supple but with bright acidity on the palate with bright red
cherries and sweet tobacco emerging nicely. The finish is persistent and with medium intensity of tannins and fruit. ~ Winery Notes
One of the four crown princes of hell. Roughly translated to ‘without yoke’ in Hebrew. It is believed that Belial is the
purest definition of ‘lawlessness.’ The correlation is that much of what has come to be known as ‘Supertuscans’ or
‘IGT’ is simply lawless. People blending international varietals with indigenous varietals or not following the DOC
laws and producing 'renegade wine.'
This is 100% Sangiovese sourced from a single vineyard near Siena, in the Chianti Colli Senesi zone, though not
labelled as such. Winemaker, Riccardo Campinoti is a firm believer that the wine is made in the vineyard and when
he found this one with mature vines (27-47-years of age) he knew he had something special. This is the fourth vintage
from this site and the results are quite apparent. The grapes were hand harvested and fermented whole berry
including 20 days of skin contact to extract color but not too much tannin. Fermentation, both alcoholic and
malolactic occurred in stainless steel tank and the wine rested in tank with a small percentage seeing neutral wood
for an additional eight months prior to bottling.
2018 was a vintage of pure harmony. After the very good 2017, though with low yields, 2018 brought a return to
normalcy of crop size and maintained extremely high quality. It has the opulence of the 2015 and the structure of the
2016. The vineyard missed the heavy spring and early summer rains that affected Montalcino to the south and the
growing season was warm and never too hot. The humidity throughout the season was kept in check due to
northwesterly winds. Harvest was smooth and had fruit with beautiful color and acidity.

Poggio Anima is a joint venture between one of Tuscany's rising stars, Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie in Montalcino and his U.S.A. importer Ronnie Sanders of Vine Street Imports. The idea is straightforward: to source great vineyards from existing relationships and produce a real wine that conveys a place and a grape. These wines are not bulk wines or leftover juice from a winery; instead, they are the result of long-standing relationships with reputable and respected growers throughout Italy.
Why the ancient pagan labels?
There is an everyday dichotomy between good and bad in the world. Looking for balance in all things (including wine) is a vital quest for many. The Eastern ideology of Yin Yang is the core of this 'balance' in the Poggio Anima concept.
Fusing this Eastern belief with Western philosophy is apparent when you look at the contradiction of red and white (wines), good vs evil (demons vs angels) and modern ideas with old world winemaking practices (catchy, fun packaging with classic old world wine).
The white wines are named after religious archangels while the reds are named after fallen angels. Each wine was specifically named for the persona of the grape, region or style of the wine. Each wine hails from one variety, a single-vineyard and representing its indigenous place of origin.
