A blend of 75 Merlot and 25 Pignolo - Pignolo is a native variety of Friuli-Venezia Giulia that's been making a bit of a comeback in recent years. Pignolo has a profile not unlike Merlot - plummy, blackberry fruit, supple texture, etc. The RS has elegance despite maintaining a rustic quality... Medium bodied and modest in both alcohol and oak influence.
"From vineyards planted in ponka clay (a particular formation- mineral-rich, dense and flaky on the surface) trained in guyot and alberello and on average, 30 year old vines. The vineyards are organicaly worked, south-facing. mown grass, pruning cuttings and lees are the only fertilization. Only copper, sulfur and propolis are used as treatments and even then, as little as possible.
Grapes are-de stemmed, then the fruit and must go into truncated wooden fermentors (25HL) and are co-fermented, punch downs occur 3-4 times a day. The wine is then aged in 25hl used barriques for 3 years and allowed to rest in bottle for 6 months. No fining or filtration." - Importers Notes
