About
This wine along with its deceased sibling, The Innocent (Viognier) is what started the rise
to illustrious fame and fortune for the Judge. The days of Shallow Creek Estate were
radically altered when new marketing and branding took over leaning on Georges legal
career. What never changed though was the source of this bold value until the demand
outstripped the supply. This estate bottled Shiraz started from a single block thats first
plantings date back to 1898 and it has the concentration and power to prove it. Today, the
demand for this wine has gone crazy like the Chinese thirst for DRC and George had to
finally begin sourcing fruit from nearby vineyards.
The grapes are picked when The Judge feels the grapes are at their maximum flavor and
density, often quite late. If it wasnt for The Judges deft hand and old, gnarly vines, the
grapes would surely succumb to a fateful ending. The soil and roots allow for this to occurs
and still maintain freshness in the wine.
Tasting Note
Inky ruby. The prettiness of violet and vanilla; the work of dense, ripe, inky plum; the
foundation of firm, grainy tannin. Its a well-built house, fitted and decorated. It is energetic
with plenty of dark berry and floral notes. Fine-grained tannins give shape to the long,
sappy, appealingly sweet finish
Who is this George Shinas character? None other than your standard night court judge by evening and winemaker turned partying rockstar by day/weekend. The honorable George Shinas is truly the international man of mystery especially when partnered with his dynamic duo brethren and de facto winemaker, Stephen Black of Small Gully.
The vines here are gnarly and struggle to stay alive with what seems to be limitless drought and testy soils. George tends to them with the utmost care and love. His wines have developed a bit of a cult following in the US...and by cult, we mean closer to Heaven's Gate and Branch Davidians than Screaming Eagle or Coche-Dury.
His wines are smartly named after varying legalese terms...Guilty (Shiraz), Innocent (Viognier), Verdict (Cabernet Sauvignon), Sweet Justice (Moscato) and his bad ass reserve wine (Executioner). Prisoner it is not...this guy puts the prisoners away!!!
