James Suckling 90
This has a really juicy, ripe-fruit feel with peaches and nectarines, as well as mangoes, delivered in fresh, attractive, drink-now mode.-JS
Starmont Chardonnay is crafted to enjoy with food or simply by the glass. The goal is to retain the focus on the unique Chardonnay fruit expression of Carnerosbright citrus and apple, along with modest tropical fruit notes and spice. The 2017 is pale gold in color featuring flavors of lemon-lime and green apple, a midpalate with medium body backed by fresh acidity and subtle notes of dried sage that show on the medium length finish. This is an exceptionally crisp and refreshing Chardonnay from Carneros that will gain complexity for three years from vintage.-Winemakers Notes
Sitting at the crossroads of Carneros and Napa Valley, Starmont occupies a portion of the historic Stanly Ranch. Established as a wine growing region over 150 years ago, Carneros is world renowned for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. With foggy mornings and cool afternoon bay breezes creating the perfect conditions for these varietals, Starmont wines are expressive, food-friendly and distinctly Carneros.
The Starmont story began over 25 years ago, starting as an integral part of the Merryvale brand. Led by the Starmont Chardonnay and delivering high quality Carneros and Napa Valley wines at approachable prices, Starmont complemented the more mature Merryvale portfolio. For a decade and a half, these two brands shared space at our venerable St. Helena facility. It was a perfect partnership, but as Starmont grew from a single wine into a full-fledged brand, it became time to move out.
Opportunity to find a new home was realized in 2005. Starmont acquired 50 acres of prime Carneros vineyard, a portion of the Stanly Ranch Estate first planted in 1872, and broke ground on the new winery the same year. Honoring the heritage of the vineyard, Starmont has constructed a state-of-the-art green winery. Among other steps taken towards sustainability, the Starmont Winery recycles 100 of winery process water, diverts over 98 of waste away from ending up in a landfill and generates enough electricity each day to power over 250 homes. In creating a certified Napa Green Winery, Starmont ensures that the surrounding area will remain pristine for future generations to enjoy.-Winery Notes

As the first winery production facility built after the repeal of prohibition, Merryvale occupies a unique place in the history of Napa Valley and California wine history. Situated on Highway 29 in the beautiful St. Helena, the iconic building that houses Merryvale Vineyards has long been established as a premier winemaking facility. With roots dating back to the early days of fine wine production, Merryvale was the winemaking home to such luminaries as Robert and Peter Mondavi, the Christian Brothers, and H. William Harlan.
Merryvale's proprietors, the Schlatters, are traditionalists with vision, committed to preserving the winery's rich past while forging a path of winemaking innovation. Alongside their young winemaker, Simon Faury, they have sharpened their focus on Bordeaux varieties, the wines for which Napa is most renowned.
Founded on the principle that great wines are born in the vineyard, Merryvale Vineyards has a long-standing tradition of sourcing grapes from exceptional vineyards throughout the Napa Valley. The process for selecting vineyards that are worthy of the Merryvale Vineyard label is an intense, rigorous and exacted process. Careful attention is paid to microclimate, soils and sustainable vineyard management practices. Sites with unique aspects and characteristics coupled with our estate vineyard sources allow us to create rich, balanced and truly expressive Napa Valley wines. The commitment involved in growing grapes for Merryvale – specified by vineyard blocks or even row-by-row selections – result in wines with intense flavors and soft, supple tannin structure.
